If you open the hood, and are facing the engine compartment. Look down just in front of the intake manifold.

There is a black cap that has a raised hex on it. The filter is under the cap. It takes a cartridge style filter. There is a special wrench for it as well. If you move the coolant line/fill point you will have better access to the cap to remove. One word of advice, Change the oil when the car is not HOT, you will get burned changing the filter if its hot.

Where is the oil filter located at on a 1992 Buick Regal and is it hard to change?

I heard there hard to take off, how would you get them offWhere is the oil filter located at on a 1992 Buick Regal and is it hard to change?
no doubt that it's where the first answerer said.. but no it's not hard to do at all! here's something that'll show you how to do it.. of course your motor isn't conveniently outside of your car and being under the car is a totally different story.. but it's still the same.

http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public鈥?/a>

you've got to drain the oil from the oil pan first.. then empty that and use whatever you used to put the filter in after you remove it.. be careful because the oil didn't drain out of the filter so it's still full.Where is the oil filter located at on a 1992 Buick Regal and is it hard to change?
depends on the engine, but i think those only came with 3800s. if that is indeed the engine you have, the filter is located on the passenger side of the engine, sort of behind the right front wheel. they are not the hardest ive seen, however, they can be tricky. tip: don't jack the car up by the right front control arm or it will be in your way to get filter off. have at it and good luck.
The filter is on the passenger side front of the motor. There not hard to take off just go to the auto parts store and by the filter and a filter wrench and go for it.

What is the correct name for the two oil lines/hoses that run down to the oil filter on a 99 f250 light duty?

Can anyone help? This is the model with the 5.4 v8 triton. The oil filter is located under the front bumper(driver side) These lines are leaking and I need to replace them, yet I'm finding the parts hard to look up since i am unsure of the actual name for them. Or if any one knows of a website that can help me, i'd be most appreciative. What is the correct name for the two oil lines/hoses that run down to the oil filter on a 99 f250 light duty?
You can call any ford dealer and ask for the parts department. They will be able to tell you what it's called. And give you a price. It will probably be high. If it's not a dealer only item you can get it cheaper at an auto parts store. Once you know what to ask for that is.What is the correct name for the two oil lines/hoses that run down to the oil filter on a 99 f250 light duty?
either oil cooler lines or most likely ';Oil filter relocation lines';. They used to put the filter directly on the block but i guess they thought it was safer to put it in the front fender where most accidents occur.
The lines located at the front bumper are most likely the oil cooler lines, One is a feed line and the other is a return line. It also may be a transmission cooler and the lines would be the same, a feed line and a return line.

oil filters are usually by the oil pan. look for the oil pan and then around it and you should see a cylindrical type can. That's your oil filter.

On the right hand side of the engine there should be a cover with 3 bolts holding it on. The lowest bolt is the oil filter drain bolt and is usually different to the other two bolts. The oil filter is in the square cover on the bottom of the crankcase.

Don't even think about removing the bolt, without a 6 point wrench!!!! The bolt is soft aluminum. Don't loosen it with a socket either. It can easily slip off.

The cover has 2 little tabs. They're to line up the cover when

re-assembling and to keep the cover from turning.

When you remove the filter, check for the washer. They like to stick to the filter.

Lube the o-rings of the new filter and screw it on to the oil filter bolt. Sometimes if you just push the filter on, the rubber breaks off the filter.

When I changed the oil in my 1997 Honda Accord, there was no oil in the oil filter-none. Should I be concerned?Should there be oil in my oil filter when I change my car's oil?
Sometimes if the engine has not been driven for a day or two there will be very little oil in the filter. All the oil will have been down in the pan.Now if the engine has been driven then there would be oil in the filter.Should there be oil in my oil filter when I change my car's oil?
This will depend on where the oil filter sits in the system.

If it sits vertically then really there should be oil in there.

If however is screws horizontally on to the side of the block the oil might have drained down when you drained the sump.

Either way if you had been driving any distance with no oil pumped up into the system the oil pressure light would have been on and more to the point lots of very expensive sounding noises would have been coming from under the bonnet.

YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE A LITTLE OIL IN IT (HORIZONAL MOUNTED TYPE BLOCKS) BUT MOST CARS THAT HAVE THESE TYPES OF FILTER PLACEMENTS DESIGNS THEIR FILTERS W/CHECK VALVES IN THEM,TO PREVENT DRY STARTS(NO OIL IN THE FILTER WHEN ENG. Yes,the oil filter should be totally full when you take it off. If your car was making a clinking sound before you changed it, then it is possible you might have warped the head.
yes there should be oil in the filter is theres oil in the engine if so could be a bad or clogged oil pump need to get fixed asap or you could do internal damage to your engine burn up rings bearings etc dont drive it

I thought I just answered this, but, again, lefty loosey-righty tighty. Use an oil filter wrench or take it to JiffyLube to change the filter as it is slightly more important to change the filter over changing the oil.Can I go without changing my oil filter for 5k miles?
It'll be fine. You'll have half a quart of dirty oil in the system, but most manufacturers recommend change intervals of a five to seven thousand miles now anyway. The 3,000 miles everybody uses is from grandpa's days when oil didn't last half as long as it does now.
I wouldn't do it. Changing the oil without the filter is pointless, the new oil is contaminated almost immediately. I would take it somewhere and let them do it. It's worth the life of your engine.

Can you clean and reuse an oil filter?

I am low on cash and have no access to atv oil filters at this time, i have a 2003 yamaha raptor and it is running kind of bad, and I need to replace the oil filter, and I was wondering if I could just clean and reuse it.Can you clean and reuse an oil filter?
Dude... consider the amount of money you have invested in the raptor... Then consider what an oil filter costs..

Don't ride it until you can afford a filter. They cannot be adequately cleaned and you run a risk of blowing out the filter element if you try.. then you have no filtration. Can you clean and reuse an oil filter?
Oil filters are not designed to be backwashed. Nor would you, on a car. The filter only costs $3, so there's nothing you could clean it with that's cheaper than the filter itself.

HOWEVER- You can keep using your old filter. You can leave the oil filter on for two or 3 oil changes; no problem. They never get full of dirt on the typical duty cycle. If it does get full of dirt (it won't) there's even a bypass valve for that.
i believe u can clean it but u just cant use soap and water u actually need to get an oil filter cleaning kit lol

best bet is to stop riding it and wait until u get some money and buy a whole new oil filter, if not just borrow some money from some one or get a credit card lol
Never re-use a paper type element !!! park the Raptor till you can get a new filter. there are cleanable racing oil filters out there they have a metal type finish.please dont try to clean it though because it will harm the engine!
There is no cleaning and reusing the old filter. Just wait until you can buy a filter and then do the oil change. If you were to just change the oil, it would be instantly dirtied by that old oil which is in the old filter.
Don't do it. Filters are just few dollars. Engines are few thousands of dollars.

Oil filters have valve to limit the oil back flow. Even if you think you got the dirt out, there's a lot of dirty still in there.

    Good Luck...
Yes, You can clean and reuse the oil filter. Just make sure that you don't do this all the time. I do it myself when i dont have the spare cash. It works.. go for it!
well that would be better than leaving it clogged and dirty. but if you cant afford it dont ride until you can. you have a risk of damage if you dont run clean oil and filter...
By trying to clean it you could break down the paper elements and this could plug the filter. Don't try it.
That's just plain bad economics - cash in some returnable bottles and put a new filter on it.
no!, because 1 thing, you wont get all the dirt out of it, besides you can buy them for about 4 or 5 dollars.

just remove the filter and you will loose between 1/2 qt. to a qt. of oil when the filter comes off, just replace what you lose.Does my oil need to be drained if i want to change my oil filter?
sure you can. You may lose about a quart of oil.

If you don't have a filter wrench and it is a spin-on oil filter, I have used a screwdriver and rammed it into the filter and then spun it off using the screwdriver for leverage.

If you have a large pair of channel locks, you can use them also.

    good luck.
Ya but in a bind you can just hammer a punch or screwdriver through it to get it off. I had to do it to get one off one time, and they only need to be hand tight going back on because they seem to get more tight with heat, I never use a filter wrench anymore.
u dont have to drain but u will lose some oil. cant u twist it off by hand with a towel on it? if not, u can always use a channel lock plier.

Thanks!Does anyone have a wix oil filter in their jeep wrangler?
Yes, it's fine. I only use WIX filters as I've seen one too many Fram filters collapse. A few of my buddies choose to run WIX / Napa gold filters for a 5.0 mustang. It holds more oil and has a bigger filter for better particle removal.Does anyone have a wix oil filter in their jeep wrangler?
The larger filter takes more oil, but so long as the threads and the seal were correct and there is clearance for the filter there is no problem with the size difference. I do wonder why it took an exta quart; be sure that you let the engine sit wihtout running for about three hours and recheck the oil level to make sure that it is not overfull.
The stated oil capacity assumes you're using a standard-size filter. A larger filter will hold more oil, so you need to add more oil.

Leaves the filter kinda dented and scraped, but you don't need it anyway. I never use the original wrenches ever.

Here is a link to a good comparison of about 15 or 20 oil filters, comparing features such as filter media, construction, bypass valve, end caps and sealing methods. It is interesting how many brand names are actually produced by the same manufacturer.

Wix seems to be one of the best, overall.

http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilt鈥?/a>What is the best oil filter to use?
Fram filters have had numerous problems resulting in failure. I prefer WIX. To the person promoting his business here....Take it somewhere else. This isn't the place to snag a few bucks by luring in customers.
When I was getting my assocates degree in auto teck, We did and experement with oil filters. We cut them open to see what was inside and how much filter there was in side.

    The best we found was

    STP dubble action oil filter

    Ac Filter

    napa gold

    napa silver

    This was rating them 1-10

Low oil filters with little filtraction in them was a followes

    #5 fram

    #4 purolator

    #3 valavoline

    #2 quickey oil mart filters

Oil filters sold at the oil mart such as queckey lub and them places use a cheep filter that is why thy( not the manufactors) say change you oil every 3000 miles because them cheep oil filters will not keep your oil any cleaner longer then 3000 miles.

If you look in the mantance books for your car it will say 5000-7000 depending on your driving condictions. In most cases 5000 is good but them quick oil places will say 3000 .
i have used fram filters for 20 years now and never had any problems from them most people prefer to use the brand that the car came with, all of them are guaranteed not to do damage to your engine fram is as good as any of the rest and a little cheaper also, good luck.
I have seen many cars use different ones. The importance is '; regular '; oil changes. Purolator is good, Fram is good.
Inquire at the better service stations to see what they use. If you have real interest go through the internet to each manufacturer and ask how their filter compares with whatever.
I'm with Patrick. I vote WIX. I run a WIX filter on everything I own. Cost a little more, but I've heard too many death stories about Fram coming apart internally...
what ever oil filte you should be car manufacture spec realy it depends on micro filliment the more micro more trap it collets

What type of oil filter do you use in your high performance car?

Get the best oil and filter that you can afford. With Amsoil, you can go 1 year or 20,000 miles between oil changes. People who change their oil every 3000 miles are just lining others' pockets.

http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/default鈥?/a>What type of oil filter do you use in your high performance car?
Normal no name brand whatever it doesent matter what matters is if your beating up your engine you need to change you oil more often than if you werent like say 1500 instead of 3000 miles i change mine every 1000 use normal oil no sythentic just wasting your money but if u use it already stick too it i found that switching oil all the time ur asking to blow your motor ive blown plenty if you have any more questions ask awayWhat type of oil filter do you use in your high performance car?
I use Fram filters and then install an Engine Sentry inside the filter. This ensures no steel particulates will pass through the filter, even though unassisted filtration only goes down to about 20-microns.

Where is the Oil Filter on a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu? I bought the filter and it is actually a cartridge?

I bought the oil filter and oil the other day and the filter actually looks like the same stuff an air filter is made of... I think the guy called it a cartridge?? Where does it go?Where is the Oil Filter on a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu? I bought the filter and it is actually a cartridge?
Check on the left side of the engine block right under the hood. There should be a plastic cap on it. The plstic cap should screw off with a 1'; socket w/ rachet. This task is easier to do if you have an extension on your rachet. Hope this helps you.Where is the Oil Filter on a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu? I bought the filter and it is actually a cartridge?
check the top of your engine, it probably says eco-tec. On the right side of the engine towards the bottom you will see a circular cap that you will have to take off and the filter will be attached. take it off and put the new one on. If you do have an eco-tec it will take 5 quarts of oil. However, if your engine does not say ecotec it will be above your passenger wheel and to the left. Make sure that you looked up the right year for your car and got the right filter. You are probably right though since most 2002 and newer Chevys have these engines. Good Luck!!
there is probably a can shaped bulge on the side of your engine block, with a plastic looking cap on it...that is where it goes.

worst case scenerio, take it to jiffy lube and ask to see where it is when they change the oil.

How long does it take for an oil filter to crack?

my gf got an oil change about 2 months ago, since then she has put about 2,000 miles on the car. her oil filter is cracked. im wondering whether the place she took it to didnt do the work she paid for.How long does it take for an oil filter to crack?
sounds like a defect get it warrantyedHow long does it take for an oil filter to crack?
The engine oil filter should never ever have a crack present inside or out.The integrity of the oil filtration system is vital to the longevity (lasts a long time) of the engine as a whole, any crack(s) could eventually lead to low oil pressure and inadequate lubrication of vital engine components, in the event of warning system failure your engine without proper lubrication could experience complete seizure.

The tech who installed the oil filter may have neglected to lubricate sealing ring with oil prior to installing the filter resulting in a cracked seal.
Oil filters don't crack under normal range of usage, installation, or even moderate abuse. If there is an actual crack in the casing then you should also be examining it for an outside indentation from something that struck it as well as the other items around it. Odds are that she ran over something that did the damage.

If the oil filter was cracked at the time of the install then it would have been leaking constantly from day one. Oil pools into the oil filter and the oil pan when the car is turned off. There should have been oil puddles everywhere she parked for longer than 5 minutes.
As a general rule oil filters should not crack, however I have had an replacement filter purchased from Halfords split after a couple of weeks.

When I replaced it I striped the oil filter and found that it had only been spot welded on the top and bottom of the filter and not in the center.

I suspect there was a manufacturing problem and I think you have had the same problem.

    Ja.
By saying ';cracked';, do you mean it is leaking oil out of the opening. As others have said, I too in my over 40 years of working on cars have never had one crack. I have seen them come loose or split a gasket, but never crack. If it is indeed leaking , I would contact the shop that did the work and have them make things right for her.
if the filter actually has a crack in it and it isnt just a scratch or a crack in the paint then all of the oil would leak out of the car. if it actually is cracked then it is almosr certainly a manufacturing defect because they should never crack no matter how old they are. i could believe that the seam split open more than i could believe the metal wall spontaneously cracked
%26gt;%26gt; oil change about 2 months ago, since then she has put about 2,000 miles on the car. her oil filter is cracked.

I've never heard of oil filter crack. I heard of people not changing them for years and still not crack.

    ===

%26gt;%26gt; im wondering whether the place she took it to didnt do the work she paid for.

That is a possibility. But it is more likely they used cheap defective parts.

    Good luck...
I've never heard of an oil filter cracking. The only two things I can think of is that she hit something ( if the filter is on the located on the bottom of the engine ) or it was somehow damaged while it was installed.
    The way they inspect the products have her take it back or just buy another filter %26amp; contact the oil filter comp as they would like to have it to see when they stamped it out is making it to thin%26gt;Your only talking about a few $ for the filter%26gt;
She may have Bin driving a little to fast on a dirt road ( or any road ) and kicked up a rock from the front tires and cracked it. Especially if the car is FWD.
Obviously a poor quality filter, or the installer somehow managed to damage the filter. Filters don't EVER crack, they are designed to handle 10 times the max oil pressure.
All oil filters are made by machines now, odds are it was cracked before installation. They only spot check occasionally and missed this one.

You should take the car back and they will probably replace it free if she has the recite.
never had an oil filter crack in 46 yrs. of driving, you must have gotten a defective filter, take it back to where you had the oil changed and see what they say.
i have replaced over 200,000 filters and i have never seen one crack for anything other than the tool that i used to brake it loose from the engine.
the oil filter should NEVER crack.

Perhaps they over-tourqued it, or charged you for a new one and put on a used one.

Where is the filter located? SHe could have hit something..
sounds like its been damaged after or during fittng, the seal should be the weakest part of the filter, ive seen these brake or blow out but not a cracked filter casing, they should last longer than we do.
Your oil filter should not crack unless you ran over something that damage it. Oil filters are not expensive anyhow so just do an oil change and that will take care of your problem...
    OIL FILTERS DON'T CRACK!!!!!!!!!

Which Dollar Store did this place BUY their filter FROM?

    NEVER go back there again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It might be the paint on the filter, giving the illusion of a crack.
I think you are mistaken. If it was cracked the car would have lost it's oil and ruined the engine.
The paint finish is probably cracked.
It takes 1.34 seconds for a oil filter to fully crack.
Never in 40 years have I heard of an oil filter cracking.
That's the first time I heard that.... the oilf filter must be defective or over torqued
they either over torqued it or something has hit it....

  • Aircraft oil filters - any made of sintered bronze balls for filtering? What other substances used to filter?

I was reading a Popular Mechanix magazine from the 1960's, and a guy was claiming that the micro-welded bronze ball type of oil filter in airplanes of the day would allow an automobile engine to run 200k or more miles, that it filtered the tiny 2-4 micron-sized particles that kill most automobile engines. Any truth to that, and what type of filter material is used in aircraft engines now? Anyone tried to run an aircraft oil filter in an automobile?Aircraft oil filters - any made of sintered bronze balls for filtering? What other substances used to filter?
You can ';over filter'; oil. This was a problem with the toilet roll filters of the seventies. These were only used in the automotive industry.

The filters used in large radial engines (Wright and P%26amp;W) were made up of series of disc shaped screens separated by corrugated spacers. These filters can be dismantled for cleaning.

The smaller engines fitted to bug smashers use a filter similar to those uesd in a car.

Gas turbine engines use gause type filters that can be cleaned and reused.

There is no reason why you couldnt use an aircraft filter in your car if you fabricate an adaptor to suit the car's engine.Aircraft oil filters - any made of sintered bronze balls for filtering? What other substances used to filter?
ive worked on b1b aircraft and kc135 and we use just a paper media filter

I have a water leak the drips down around the oil filter?

AIts an explorer Sport 4.0 and it got hot. I let it cool down and then added water to the radiator and it just ran on the ground over my oil filter. Could this be a head gasket?I have a water leak the drips down around the oil filter?
could be, it also could be a freeze plugI have a water leak the drips down around the oil filter?
yes it could be a head gasket however before jumping to conclusions you should start at the bottom and follow the leak upwards to its source. there are smaller hoses and the intake gasket along that path that could be the problem also.coolant has a way of cruisin around and exiting somewhere other than where you think...
That, or the intake is leaking, if its a wet intake. if its running outthat fast, then it should be easy to spot. I think there are also heater hose nipples back there, but I cna't be certain. Could have blown out a freeze-out plug fron the back of the head or block, also.
its probably a freeze plug leaking.

Go to Autozone, they can set you up in the right direction. You can show them your car and they'll tell you if you have the I4 or a V6.

You'll probably be fine with a Fram or STP oil filter since it is just a Honda Accord. You can go for a K%26amp;N but I don't think you'd notice any difference.

Where is the oil filter located on a 1995 Buick Roadmaster sedan?

I looked under the hood and underneath my car (of course I couldn't slide all the way underneath it because it sits so low) but I didn't see where the oil filter is located. I wound up taking it to Walmart instead of doing it myself, but I'd like to know for future reference. How hard is the oil filter to reach without using ramps?Where is the oil filter located on a 1995 Buick Roadmaster sedan?
I am guessing it has the famous 5.7L V8 (Chevy 350 for old school). Unless you can drive up a curb on the passenger side and use the parking brake of course(drain plug is on driver side and you wanted pointed down for more oil to drain), or properly jack it up and put on two 4-leg jack stands, very hard to reach the filter without stands or ramps.

What is the differents between an auto oil filter and a motorcycle oil filter?

motorcycle oil filters are smaller! that's basically it.What is the differents between an auto oil filter and a motorcycle oil filter?
I am gonna disagree with the above 2 answers to a degree. Some automotive filters are relatively small and some motorcycle oil filters are larger than these smaller filters. Take for example the 6 cylinder motorcycle engines. there filters are larger than some 4 cylinder automotive types. And even if you go back far enough, you would find that when Honda first started importing cars into this country back in the 70's they were using 4 cyl. motorcycle engines to power those cars! so in that case there was no difference at all. What is the differents between an auto oil filter and a motorcycle oil filter?
    No difference.

I service three Hondas, a GL1500, a VF750 and a VT600. They all use the Purolator filter I buy at Pep Boys. The larger model will fit but I don't feel the need for the extra capacity.

The important differences in oil filters are in the material the filtering element is made of, the size of particles it removes from the oil and the pressure it takes to open the check valve.

What is the difference between an oil filter FL-2005 and a FL-400?

I heard that these filter are the same; Is that true? What is the difference between an oil filter FL-2005 and a FL-400?
The filters are not the same, they are about the same dimensions, but the main difference is the pressure setting of the bypass valve (The valve that allows the oiling system to bypass the filter should it become clogged, so you don't drop oil pressure). The bypass valve of the FL-400S is about 9 psi, where the FL-2005 is set at about 16 psi. The gasket dimensions are slightly different as well, but close enough that both should seal. The threads are the same on both filters, and you could probably substitute them for each other if you had to, but I would just stick with what your owners manual calls for. What is the difference between an oil filter FL-2005 and a FL-400?
The FL-400S is used on the 2.3L Duratec four cylinder found in the Ranger and if I'm not mistaken, first generation Ford Escapes. I believe there are other models and engines it might be used for. If I'm not mistaken, the V6 Lincoln LS takes the FL-400S as well-- but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

If what the previous answerer says is true, then no, these are not the same filters. The FL-2005 appears to be used mostly for the 2.0 four-cylinder commonly found in Ford's compact cars. I would hazard a guess that the most common use for the FL-400S is for the 2.3 Duratec four-cylinder found in Ford's small trucks and SUVs, as well as a few smaller-displacement V6 engines.

  • How do you repair the VW oil filter housing?

I changed the oil for the first time in my VW Golf (R32) and the little oil filter drain plug Torx fitting is stripped out. How on earth would I get that out...or should I just replace the entire housing ($55) and drain plug ($20)?How do you repair the VW oil filter housing?
If you have the funds available I would replace the whole assembly. If there haven't been any leaks so far it is likely torqued correctly, but the next time you go to change the oil you will have to deal with it again. You have until your next oil change to get that parts, I would do it then so you don't have to spend the money on the oil until you are ready too.

Where is the oil filter located on a 1987 Toyota Corolla?

Yes I know in the engine, but where exactly,I need to change the oil but can't find the oil filter.

Is it hard to take off?Where is the oil filter located on a 1987 Toyota Corolla?
Here is the facts, the real deal....if you can't find it, then you need to take it to a JiffyLube or similar oil change shop to have your oil changed. Is it hard to take off? Yes, unless you have the right tool to take it off and know where it is. Why do you want to crawl underneath your car and have hot oil dripping down your arm and all over your garage or driveway when you can have a oil change shop do the whole thing and dispose of the old oil while you sip free coffee? And while you are at it, watch the mechanics change the oil and you will learn where the oil filter is.Where is the oil filter located on a 1987 Toyota Corolla?
i think that the flter is under the exhaust manifold under the hood just open the hood and look at the front of the engine under the exhaust manifold not positive but that is where it is on most toyota corollas hope i helped and it can be tough to get off just a simple strap wrench or filter pliers will get it off quicly though
Depends on how mechanically inclined you are. It's usually located towards the front of the engine towards the bottom, and usually made out of plastic and in a different plethora of available colors (but there are a few that are metallic). it is cylindrically-shaped and will need a special sump wrench to be removed.

If you stare straight down from the top of the engine, it is very noticeable yet discreet; usually branded after the name of the oil change place or supplier (e.g. Napa, Jiffy Lube[?] etc.), Vendors of filter-related products (Fram, K%26amp;N), or the car manufacturer (Toyota; more often seen from dealerships but not always).

However, like others said, it's a messy job to do, especially if you don't know what you're doing and dangerous without the right equipment, but it can be mastered under practice with minimal mess. If you do, are you single? Kidding, of course (but guys, don't you want a mechanically-savvy woman instead of the type that wonders why the car has black smoke when the last oil change was...Never?).

thanx. How often should i replace the oil filter in my car?
daewoo espiro- I think they went out of business......depends how much you want to spend,,,you buy cheap oil and a filter and change the oil every 5000 miles yourself, or buy amsoil synthetic oil and filter, using that combo you can go a whole year without oilchanges,,,

www.amsoil.com try it,,,,,I have 250000 miles on my bmw and it runs like a champ....How often should i replace the oil filter in my car?
if you have the owners manual it will tell you in there. some manufacturers want you to change it at every oil change 3,000 miles or whatever they recommend some have you change the filter at every other oil change.
Oil is cheaper than an engine overhaul so change the oil and filter every 3000 miles or 5000 kilometers.
Every 3,000 miles and your car will last longer.
every three months or a certain amount of mileage.
I'd say every time you change your oil for 3000mchange you filter
every 3,000 miles or 3 months, change it with the oil

  • Why is my Jeep Cherokee Sport pushing oil out of fill cap, dipstick tube and oil filter?

I have a '95 Jeep Cherokee Sport with the in-line 6 cyl. I recently noticed that the rocker arm cover gasket was leaking and it looked like it had pushed out the corner of the gasket. I replaced the rocker arm cover gasket and it's not leaking now but once I replaced it oil started leaking out of the filler cap, the dipstick tube, and the oil filter. What is going on here? I fix one leak and I get 3 more. Why is my Jeep Cherokee Sport pushing oil out of fill cap, dipstick tube and oil filter?
I had this happen to my Cherokee, I lost 2 quarts of oil in 10 minutes. The rubber line to my PCV valve had become pinched. There is bypass when this happens forces oil out the crank case.

This PCV valve has a line that runs to your air filter box. Check that line to make sure it is not clogged or pinched in any way also inspect the PCV valve itself to make sure it is not clogged.

    Here's a diagram:

Please checkout my blog: http://indyjeep.wordpress.comWhy is my Jeep Cherokee Sport pushing oil out of fill cap, dipstick tube and oil filter?
Find out how your engine breathes. If it has a crankcase breather, then it sounds like it's plugged. Engines do build up internal pressure, but breathers typically relieve all of it. IF it's not plugged, then it SOUNDS like scored cylinders. I.e. dirt ingestion through rings and pistons. This causes the cylinder that's bad to act like it's own air compressor and will cause oil blow-by from any orifice available to it.

    Good luck!
all the others and thin oil generly by gasoline polluting the oil pull stick and check oil level and smell for gas slick or thin
Check the pcv valve and pcv fresh air intake hose. You may be plugged and that will cause crankcase pressure which will cause a leak.......md

It is called an air filter housing, and the oil bath innards are called the filter element. Most oil bath filters have been replaced by modern filter elements that are made to fit the original housing and retain the original look. Here is a typical 1955-1958 set-up and upgrade.

do you mean the air filter????????????
By carby do you mean carburetor and are you refering to an oil bath air filter????
I think you are talking about the air cleaner housing not the oil filter, it's a 2 piece holder for the air filter, a base part and a lid.
if you are talking about the air cleaner the filter would be called an air filter

Has anyone ever had a oil filter seal not seal real good on engine block?

I put my new filter on and clean around the block and put the new filter on but it still leaks. it is a re-built engine but i wouldnt think that would have anything to do with it. any suggestions on what i can do?Has anyone ever had a oil filter seal not seal real good on engine block?
first make sure you have the right filter, make sure the old gasket from the old filter came off with it, and lastly put some clean oil on the new gasket this sometimes helps with the new filter sealing correctlyHas anyone ever had a oil filter seal not seal real good on engine block?
SteveoX has it right. The wrong filter, or if the old gasket had stuck to the block, can both cause leaks. You don't specify what engine it is, but some engines have an adapter on the block that the filter screws into. It is possible that the adapter is actually what is leaking. You will need to clean it real good and see where the oil is actually coming from.
Before replacing the oil filter, put a little oil on your finger and rub it on the rubber seal. Tighten the filter snuggly (hand tight) if it still leaks give it a quarter turn witrh a filter wrench.
If the old oil gasket was left on the engine when you installed the new oil filter, you'd know right away. It would pretty much leak a lot of oil as soon as you started the car (and I mean a lot of oil, know this from experience unfortunately).

There is a gasket right behind the oil filter fixture and sometimes this is where the leak occurs.

Also, since you have a rebuilt, be sure the block is not cracked.

Get a good light and one of those telescoping mirrors to see what's really going on.
First try removing the filter and take the gasket/seal out. Clean any oil off of it then clean the area where the gasket goes and make sure there is no oil there. Put the seal back in. This is a common problem where oil or an air pocket gets under the seal and it won't work properly. Make sure the seal is pressed in all the way. If this does not work then you could have a defective filter.
some engines have a seal or gasket behind the oil filter adapter. Might not be the filter.

What are the symptoms of dirty oil filter and does it make sense to change the engine oil?

without changing the oil filter ? but the more important question to me is how does a dirty oil filter affect the car. thanksWhat are the symptoms of dirty oil filter and does it make sense to change the engine oil?
Change the filter every time you change the oil. Oil filters aren't expensive and are cheap insurance over more costly repairs if you don't change them and they fail as a result.

Most oil filters have a ';bypass'; valve on them so that in the event the filter element clogs completely, the oil will bypass the filter element entirely to make sure your engine gets oil. Dirty, unfiltered oil is better than no oil at all in the short term, but over time if the filter is just bypassing instead of filtering, you're going to have increased wear to your engine as a result. What are the symptoms of dirty oil filter and does it make sense to change the engine oil?
Your question is not clear but,I think you are asking about changing oil without the filter.Imagine taking a bath in dirty bath water. Some filters hold a qt of oil.So by not changing it you have added 1 qt of dirty oil to your new oil....yuck.....whats the point. And the old filter is full of gunk and particles and not as free flowing as a new one.Is does not make sense. In theory you could skip changing the filter 2-3 times before it failed but, what is the point??????
Well the filter takes some impurities out of the oil but your oil still breaks down over time. Oil filterss only last a certain amount of time so not changing your oil or filter could damage your engine over time.
You should change the oil filter on each oil change. But it is not imperative. All modern oil filters have a bypass that allows the oil to flow if the filter becomes clogged. Your oil will get dirtier quicker because the debris (microscopic level) are not being filtered. how quick depends on the condition of your engine, driving habits, driving conditions, etc.

There was a time when folks changed their oil filter every other oil change. Oil filters are so cheap that it makes little sense not to change them when changing the oil. Sort of like taking a shower and putting on dirty clothes.
If your main question is does it make sense to change the oil, with out changing the filter, then no. The clean oil you just put into your motor is going throw a clogged up dirty filter giving you poor oil flow, and pushing dirty oil from the filter into the engine blcok. Which could lead to poor lubrication of the cylinder walls causing friction and eventually ruining your engine, along with numerous smaller problems.
it keeps the oil clean, if you don't it will shorten the life of the motor.
you need to read the owners manuel and gheez use some common sense change the oil install synthic oil and an fram filter for gosh sakes think will you please you do it every 3000 to 5000 miles and you do the filter also at that time its like taking a bath you dont just do behind you , you do all of you good luck
Dirty oil filters will clog oil flow and spread gunk around the engine. You should change the filter with every oil change and only use synthetic oil. Synthetic costs more but your engine will run for a lot longer and need a lot fewer repairs. It pays off in the long run, big time.
a dirty oil filter can affect your car in many ways and cause it to lock up youre best bet is to change oil and filter every three thousand miles
why would you not change the oil filter. its like 3 bucks. change it every time you change the oil.
YES CHANGE THE OIL!!!!!!!!!! Gees lady, the car will smell like burned oil, there will be spots where youve parked. The motor will run down fast with dirty oil. The filter will clog. The oil AND oil filter have to bve changed every 3,000 miles. It only cost about 12$ to purchase the oil and filter.Or else take it to a oil changing station and they will do it for about 25$ or less. Also, you must make sure your car has water %26amp;or coolant in its radiator or else the motor will blow today!
you should always change the oil and filter together it would be like taking bath and putting on the same dirty socks.... you should change the oil every 3000 or so miles the more offen the better.... a oil change worth 25 buck but a motor or new car is 1000's you decide.. the oil filter does what it sound like it filters the oil it removes the medal particles which harms your motor .. and really no symptoms other than your motor stops working
The big risk is of it clogging. If it clogs, the oil won't circulate as it should. Aside from that, in most cars the filter holds a significant amount of oil, or at least enough to taint the new oil that you're putting in. It's very difficult to get all of the oil out when doing an oil change, not changing the filter just leaves that much more dirty oil in the engine. I'd spend the three bucks.

These are all required before you can source the correct part for your car. Once you have all this info, call or visit your local auto parts store and they will set you up
Pop into Halfords. They have reference sheets that will tell you what bits for what car. I also strongly recommend that you invest in a Haynes Manual (also in Halfords). It's 拢20 but will save you that many times over. If you can't afford it ask Mum or Dad to get it as a birthday pressie.

How often should you change an oil filter when changing your oil?

You should change your oil filter EVERY time you change your oil.

Your old filter contains old oil, so change it when you put in new oil, makes sense does it not.How often should you change an oil filter when changing your oil?
YOu should change ur oil every 3000 miles and change ur oil filter with every oil change. How often should you change an oil filter when changing your oil?
every time you change the oil, change the oil filter
change it every 2000 to 3000 miles depending on if you drive highway city or country roadways also be shure to change air filter oil filter and check all fluids and belts
    EVERY TIME!

The filter is there to trap the big particles, and when your oil gets dirty your filter is full of crap as well. A filter is only a fraction of the overall cost of an oil change, so just do it!
Each time you change the oil, change the filter too.
    everytime u change the oil

a oil change and filter is alot cheaper then a eng overhual
I recommend changing the filter each time each time you change the oil, it's a little more expensive but better for your car and will extend the life of your engine. especially on newer engines the run at much higher speed.
You should change your oil filter everytime you change your oil.
every other time you change your oil.
Every time you change your oil you should change your filter also. Your filter has a quart of oil in it at all times because it is on the bottom of your engine. If you don't change the filter you are adding the dirty oil in it to the clean oil you just put in.
ok lets think about that one when dirt gets in your oil the filter traps it and cleans the oil when the filter gets full the oil bypasses the filter thats when you need to chainge the filter

high milage oil like synthetics wich can go up to 20000 miles will still need filtering as the filter plugs up with carbon

(a normal prosses of combustion) it needs to be chainged so if you are trying to save money the question should actually be how many times do i chainge the filter between oil chainges

the answer to that one is every 3000 miles chainge the filter

regular oil that hasnt been run hot can go 6000 miles and synthetics can go up to 20000 miles
change it every time. it filters contaminants out of your oil, it keeps your oil clean.
    every time.
you should ALWAYS change your oil filter when changing your oil
if you do it right then you should only have to change it once each time you chagne your oil.
Every time! Why would you want to run clean oil through a dirty oil filter? Cmon, the filter is about $4, splurge a little.
you should change your filter EVERY oil change. Average is 4 oil changes per year .
Always. You should do both at the same time, for most cars every 3000 miles.
change the filter at every oil change 3000 miles
change your filter and oil every 3000 miles.
When ever you change the oil, change the filter....your engine will last longer. Ask yourself this...spend a couple bucks now on a oil filter or end up replaceing the engine or getting another car sooner than you wanted to.

  • Should i be able to remove an oil filter without a wrench?

i know that to tighten them most of the time hand tight is enough but i have always had to remove them with a wrench. reason asking my car was leaking oil and when i checked the filter i could loosen it by hand i then re-tightened it hand tight. and am thinking about getting a wrench.Should i be able to remove an oil filter without a wrench?
They should be snug, not too tight. Next time you change your oil wipe the filter housing down with a clean rag. Then before putting oil filter back on, wipe a little oil onto the gasket in the filter. When tighteneing the filter, first go by hand until snug, then 1/4 turn more.

I hope this helps.Should i be able to remove an oil filter without a wrench?
Hi,hope you managed to fix it without any trouble.
Tighten a quarter turn past hand tight. The filter box may have the installation and tightening procedure on it.

    http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Produ鈥?/a>
Hand tighten, Wipe clean the filter mount .Place a small amount of clean oil on the gasket. Turn filter til it makes contact ..Continue to hand turn 3/4 turn. Fill and check for leaks. In a couple of days. check again. Turn 1/4 if needed. Fram and some other filter company now come with a grip material on the filter making it easy to turn. You don't want it to tight. Your next oil change will be a bear to take the old filter off. But if it keeps leaking give it a 1/4 turn at a time with an oil filter wrench.
you only need to tighten a filter hand tight and that means as tight as you can get it by hand and I have never been able to loosen a filter by hand in all the 41 yrs. I have been working on cars.
pretty hard get the wrench and be done with it. I use the wrench to tighten mine to
Not normally, but your car gets a lot of vibration, so it can happen. It has happened to me a couple of times, but I figured it was from using them cheaper brand filters.

If you change your own oil, just tighten it down about a 1/4 to 1/2 turn just past where the gasket has seated firmly. Too much will rupture the seal, and not enough will... well you know.

If you pay someone to change your oil, it's more common to have it leak simply because most times they're in such a hurry, they don't run the engine long enough to see if it leaks

before pushing you out to get the next one in.

If that's the case, just double check when you get home and it's had a chance to cool off
Even though I hand tighten mine, I still have to use a wrench to remove them.
    YES AND NO.................

    1. IF YOU CHANGE THE OIL AT 3000 MILES OR 3 MONTHS, THEN YES.

    2. IF YOU DON'T, IT CAN GET STUCK BY THE HEAT OF THE VEHICLE, THEN NO.

    3. I NEVER USE A WRENCH TO TIGHTEN UP AN OIL FILTER BECAUSE THERE IS A CHANCE THAT YOU JUST MIGHT DAMAGE IT.

    4. WHEN YOU TIGHTEN UP THE OIL FILTER, CLEAN YOUR HANDS COMPLETELY AND USE JUST YOUR HANDS AND IT WILL NOT BE LOOSE.
When installing a new oil filter you should:

    1. Oil the gasket with a thin film of oil

    2. Make sure you do not cross thread it during install; on some cars initial cross threading is a real problem and you need to exercise a lot of care; on other cars it is not much of an issue.

    3. Hand tighten as tight as you can.

    4. Wipe off any oil that is on your hands and the filter housing.

    5. Hand tighten again after you wiped hands and filter housing. Usually you will be able to get another 1/8 to 1/4 turn tighter and usually this is sufficient.

    6. After you have added oil, start the engine and check for leaks.

I have done the above for well over 25 years and only once did I have a leaker. The rubber filter gasked apparently failed on this one filter and a new oil filter resolved the leak.

I have never used an oil filter wrench to tighten and this is not recommended.

I have always needed to use an oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter - even though I did not use a wrench to tighten.

This has been my experience on vehicles made by GM, Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Honda, and Toyota so I presume it is pretty much universal.

Is it ok if I drained my oil but could not replace my oil filter but went ahead and poured in new oil?

I just did this for my 2003 saturn L200. I wanted to know if this is a huge mistake and what are the repercussions in doing so.

Also can I CHANGE the filter if there is already NEW oil in the automobile? Is it ok if I drained my oil but could not replace my oil filter but went ahead and poured in new oil?
Modern multi-weight motor oil is designed with detergents that clump contaminants in the oil together to be caught by the oil filter (hence motors without oil filters, ie: certain lawn equipment, uses non-detergent motor oil). Once the oil is in the oil filter it isn't going anywhere. If you have an oil filter with a high amount of filtration medium and a large number of internal pleating (like a Mobil 1 or Purolator Pure One filter) you will be okay. Just a note on the L200, though: most Saturns have a timing chain that has tension maintained by the oil. These timing tensioners are VERY sensitive to oil condition thus Saturns are one of the only late-model vehicles on the road that still require a severe-service recommended 3,000 mile oil change interval. If I owned a Saturn with a timing chain I would ensure that my oil is always properly filtered and maintained to prevent timing chain failure. If you need any reassurance to my answer, there's a search bar at the top of your screen. Just type in ';oil sensitivity saturn timing chain tension'; or something of that sort.Is it ok if I drained my oil but could not replace my oil filter but went ahead and poured in new oil?
Its not a huge problem, however it should probably be dealt with. If possible drain the new oil and save it, then put in the new filter. After making sure the drainplug is in securely and the filter is only hand tight but the new oil that you originally saved back into the car. Running the new oil threw the old filter wont get the oil ';dirty'; the partials trapped in the old filter will stay in the filter, not become suspended in the ';new'; oil.
that is not good for that particular filter it is made of paper/cotton like material, i have done the oil change on that particular model and you should definitely change it. it is so easy to do and you can access it right in the front of the engine bay.
as long as you did,nt start it then you can change the filter last. if you changed the filter the last time then it can wait until the next time as long as your oil is,nt filthy.
Start fresh with fresh oil, and a fresh filter. The oil has already circulated around the old filter, thus it is dirty. Why didn't you purchase a new filter when you bought the oil?
    It'll be fine.

Some equipment companies actually change filter every other oil change.

It's a six year old car.

Change the filter when you get a chance.
Not bad but your recontaminating the oil. So its pointless. Basically you need another oil change.
you can change your oil filter every other time and it will save you a lot of money and you can't change the filter with oil in the car
    1) Yes.

    2) No problem.

    3) Yes, just be sure to top off the engine oil lost in the filter.

    4) No.
Do another oil change soon and be sure you change the oil filter this time.

How often should i change the engine oil and oil filter of my car?

My Car is Honda Civic 1999.How often should i change the engine oil and oil filter of my car?
This question never ends. Every vehicle made today comes with the manufacturers recommended maintenance schedules. Usually there are two schedules one for regular duty use and the other for extreme duty use. The vast majority of drivers fall into the regular duty schedule. The recommendations in most manuals call for oil changes every 5000 to 7500 miles. Now remember that the manufacturers are the ones who foot the bill for warranty repairs so... if they say you should change the oil every 5000 to 7500 miles doesn't that make sense?

This whole thing about 3000 miles and 3 months is part of the marketing model of the quick change oil shops. Its in their best interest to convince you to change your oil as often as possible. If you were to ask them why you should follow their 3000 mile guidelines instead of the manufacturers recommendation they'll point to manufacturer's extreme duty schedule, not the normal intervals.

Now, if you're driving a taxi or delivery van in a big city, live in an extremely hot, dusty desert area, do a lot of driving on unpaved dusty roads you should probably follow the extreme duty oil change intervals... but for the vast majority of us - follow the manufacturer's recommendation for regular duty use.How often should i change the engine oil and oil filter of my car?
I say 3,000 miles or every 3 months, and I know a lot of people argue with it.

An oil change costs $25...why argue over the extra 2,000 miles when preventative maintenance, a happier engine and clean oil are all good things, especially for so little money.

Check your vehicle's maintenance book. Some will say (and I'll bet your Civic is one of them), that every 5,000 miles is OK. In that case, do what Honda says, but know that doing it any sooner won't hurt your car in anyway.

Another thing to remember is that--even though I don't see them as much anymore--don't go by the claims on the oil bottle. I know of one instance where a company was advertising 15,000 mile motor oil. I don't know how good it worked at 14,999 miles, but when an engine went bad in someone's truck, the manufacturer voided their warranty because they weren't changing oil at the proper intervals mentioned in the vehicle's guide, and the were left with a bum engine.

As long as you do what the manufacturer recommends, you'll be fine, and doing it at 3,000 miles is fine as well.
    I agree with g-man again.

However, I personally tend to change the oil(but I do it myself) around the 3000 mile mark on older vehicles that may not be in 100% top shape.

Older engines tend to have more blow-by, wear and tear, and other things that can cause the oil to get dirty faster. I like to see clean oil on a stick, but that is just me.

Fast oil change companies tend to just want to make the ';fast'; money. One service that some perform, that actually can be a good service in some cases, is having the oil analized. This is certainly not needed on newer vehicles, those under warranty, or even every oil change, but can be helpful on older high mileage vehicles. Also, some of these places tend to check a list of things and inform the driver. this can be a very good thing. Some just change the oil and check off the list.

Preventive maintenance; Checking the cv joint boots more often on older vehicles is important. Anyone that owns an older FWD has probably bought cv joints or axles because the boots cracked, were not caught, and a cv joint wears out.

Gone is the days of full service(maybe except NJ) where the attendant went the extra mile for customer satisfaction and checked certain things. Now people just drive and when it breaks down they cry and fix it or walk.

An ounce of preventive maintenance is far better than a ton of repairs.
it depends on what type of driving you do and what type of oil you use. If you do mostly in town driving you need to change it every 3000- 4000 miles, if you drive mostly highway every 6500-7500 is fine, if you use synthetic oil you can drive further between oil changes, look in the owners manual for the manufacturers recommendations, you will find it in the maintenance section.
well ,it depends on driving condition , engine condition and oil specifications but mainly check your engine oil at normal temperature (20-30)centigrade by touching ,looking to the colour and smell it at about 3000-4000 miles of using ,bad conditions such as driving in hot weather or with high acceleration need less distance to be changed and change oil filter for each 2-3 times of changing oil engine.
every four months, or 5000 miles, the oil change places say 3000, but that's just to sell more stuff...

Use a quality oil like Kendall , Castrol, or Valvoline, and a quality filter like Fram, Purolator, or Napa

Do not use Havoline, or Mobil regular, they create sludge....
Sooooo Tired of this same exact question so I now have a new answer for it.

Never! Do not change the oil EVER! you are just going to make us run out of it faster.

C'mon folks where is my thumbs down
With Todays synth or semi synth oils, every 5000 miles. If you drive it hard, or in a very cold, wet or dusty enviroment, every 3000.
The typical recommendation is 3,000 miles.
whenever it gets dirty, cleaner the oil better for the engine.
No less often than every 5000 miles or 5 months.
it depends on how many miles you put on it since the last oil change. they say around 3000 miles.
check your vehicle manual but for most vehicles its 3000 miles
Well it depends on how often you drive it.
If you are VERY smart, you will never use oil that doesn't say, ';meets of exceeds the specifications for Honda.'; Most oils do NOT meet these requirements. If you are even smarter, you will ONLY use Mobil One, ELF, or Pennzoil oil that EXACTLY meets Honda requirements. These oils, though pricier, will last for one year, or 15,000 miles SAFELY! All dino based oils create sludge. The oils I have mentioned remove and prevent sludge formation. They extend evgine life, and improve power and MPG's. SWEAR OFF the big ';V';, it is NOT the oil you have been led to believe it is!! Good Luck!!
    On average every 2k-4k miles.

Where is the oil filter located in a 98 Honda Accord?

Helping my friend change his oil filter and was told by some that the location of the oil filter in Hondas is terrible.

Any idea where it's located and how easy/ clean it would be to do with normal ';so-it-yourself'; ramps?Where is the oil filter located in a 98 Honda Accord?
It depends if it has the 4 cyl or the V6 engine. The V6 is over on the passenger side of the block near the front suspension components if I remember correctly and I know for a fact the 4 cyl is on the back side of the block between the block and the firewall. You can reach it from under the vehicle don't try to reach either from topside through the hood.

Oh, and the ramps should be good enough. But both locations sometimes cause oil to get a little messy when it comes out and drains down other components.Where is the oil filter located in a 98 Honda Accord?

you get under the truck, take a flathead screwdriver with you. Just under the bumper there is a little DOOR that you have to open to access it. I know, it's stupid. I was stumped too. You should drain all the oil out of the pan, then bear paw the oil filter off, then bear paw a new filter on, then put the plug back in then put the correct amount of oil in (look it up) or call autozone. -john in iowa

There are different sizes. Really huge for commercial trucks. Regular large for like most V8 motors. Next size down should fit yours. Ask the auto parts store for the right size for your filter to be on the safe side. They do make ones you can fit on a ratchet too, but the swivel handle on this type often come in handy. And most of the ratchet attached ones don't seem to hold up for long. Look for KD/Lisle brand, and chances are you'll be able to hand it down to your kids when you're too old to use it anymore. Plews makes a pretty decent one too. What type of oil filter wrench would work on removing the oil filter on a 1995 pontiac sun fire 2.2L?
Go to a good auto parts store and buy a small filter wrench which fits on a socket wrench. There is one made for it. It fits on a 3/8 inch ratchet. What type of oil filter wrench would work on removing the oil filter on a 1995 pontiac sun fire 2.2L?

Anyone know of a cheaper oil filter for a John Deere mower?

I figure that Fram probably makes the same size filter as the John Deere brand but at a much cheaper price. It's $12 if you buy it at Lowes. John Deere's part number is GY20577 and that fits my LA150 along with many other models. If anyone can tell me the part number of a cheaper filter I would greatly appreciate it.Anyone know of a cheaper oil filter for a John Deere mower?
I dont suggest using Fram oil filters - Ive had a couple bad ones ( the bypass in the filter made the truck sound like it had a bad set of lifters- when it never did before i changed it).

Actually, if its possible try for a larger filter - you can never have enough oil filtering. Many are undersized anyways. If possible - take the tractor to an autoparts store and see what size filter could work on it.Anyone know of a cheaper oil filter for a John Deere mower?
No problem - actually the same goes for the fuel filters - ive seen briggs/tecumseh/kohler fuel filters for $5 and up- old style carburated automotive fuel filters will work ( not fuel injected filters- the old clear style with clamps) - ive found for $2 and theyre larger/paper type. What is the best engine oil filter for my 2007 Jeep Wrangler?

I am wanting to start doing my own oil changes on my 2007 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and I want to use Mobil 1 Synthetic oil and the best filter I can buy. What is the best engine oil filter for my 2007 Jeep Wrangler?
Smart man, I started using Mobil 1 after I graduated from collage and I've put over 250K on my truck. I recently tried to overhaul it, but when I tore it down, nothing was wore out.

It's not the filter that really important as it is the oil you use. Just don't go by a cheap off the wall filter. Usually most all your parts store brands will work fine.

Hope this helps! What is the best engine oil filter for my 2007 Jeep Wrangler?
i would have to agree with the others, i have always used FRAM. great filters, and ontop of that they got that ring of black grippy stuff to make taking them off alot easier.
I would go with a FRAM oil filter. They have been proven to be the best and keep the oil cleaner than any other brand. If you are going to use high grade synthetic oil like Mobil 1, spend a few extra dollars and get a FRAM fiilter. You can't miss them, they come in a really bright orange box, and the filter itself is orange as well. FRAM is the best oil filter you can buy.
    I have always used FRAM
The Mobil synthetic oil is is fine. Just change on a regular time frame. If you cant read the dip-stick trough the oil, it's to late. The oil is the life blood of your engine. Use the better brand filter, such as fram, Napa Gold, or I use K%26amp;N brand. Remember a cheep fix only lasts a very short time. 3000 miles can be a safe time line to change your oil%26amp;filter. I would never go past 6000 miles for a change. You should always chage the filter when you change the oil. A good synthetic oil will run about $5 or $6 a quart.

How can I avoid getting leaks when changing oil filter on 2002 VW Jetta VR6?

I have a 2002 VW Jetta VR6 that has a cannister filter. When I've changed the oil, I've noticed that it leaks at the filter. I've tightened it more but it still leaks. Should the gasket that comes with the cannister filter go around the treads? How can I avoid getting leaks when changing oil filter on 2002 VW Jetta VR6?
one thing that can happen is that the gasket got lost. heres one tip: when you change the oil canaster put some oil in oil canaster. then wet the rubber gasket with the oil. it will make it easier for you to tighten the oil canaster. if you have any questions e-mail me: veni1968@yahoo.com

How Long Can I Drive With A Loose Oil Filter?

Zero miles. Loss of oil will cause instant disaster for the starved oil pump and all frictional surfaces. Buy an insexpensive cup syle oil filter wrench and make sure the old oil filter gasket has been removed before you tighten the present oil filter back up 3/4 of a turn from gasket contact. How Long Can I Drive With A Loose Oil Filter?
not very far ! just far enough until your out of oil. you better get it tightened or your biggest problem will be changing the motor. you don,t even have to be driving, just starting it up will pump the oil out of the engine. How Long Can I Drive With A Loose Oil Filter?
    Better question would be:

Why would I even drive with a loose oil filter?

You can tight it with your bare hands no special tools necessary.
Until all the oil leaks out, and you ruin your engine, why don't you tighten it up.
Until all your engines oil runs out and the engine locks up from lack of lubrication.a
I wouldn't even drive it until you replace that filter.
You shouldn't. All the oil will leak out and then you engine will burn up.
    I agreed with - evan -'s answer.

Which is as far as the car can take you.
This would depend a good deal on your speed of travel. Probably around a half mile.

  • Why are there so many types of engine oil filter?

I can see why there might be a reason for 10 or 12, maybe even 20 different types to handle different flows and pressures with engines of different sizes and performance but why are there dozens and dozens of different types? Does it not just add to costs with no actual benefit? Why are there so many types of engine oil filter?
every car takes diff filter car makers have to make thing hardWhy are there so many types of engine oil filter?
Mostly this is because there are that many different types of engines (Size of oil pan, etc.) There is also the convenience. There is an entire line of filters with rubber grip base to ease filter change. While this may add to cost a bit, the addition is worth the marginal increase in that it expediates the transfer and decreases chance of spillage.
its called copyright/patent infringement. if a maker of a filter copyrights or patents that filter, nobody else can use that design so in order to get past that legal block, other makers change the design enough to make it different and still work on the same motor and do the same job. then that new design gets copyrighted and patented. hence so many different types of filters

How hot does an oil filter get?

I'm adding magnets to my Toyota Yaris' oil filter, so can you tell me how hot the oil filter gets generally? How hot does an oil filter get?
It should get as hot as the oil gets which is roughly the temp of the engine or slightly higher, so if you have a thermostat set at 195degrees then oil should be around 220 or so. Hot, but magnet will stick. Many vehicles transmissions have a magnet built in to the pan already, and a few companies make oil filter magnets. How hot does an oil filter get?
they get very hot generally around 200 degrees or so.

Possible to change oil filter without changing oil?

I have a Toyota Camry 1989. It is leaking oil so I put about a quart in every month. The oil is therefore pretty clean, but it's time to change the filter. Is it possible to change the filter without draining the oil? How? (I'm assuming it's not too hard to change oil...)

Also, would it be bad to drain the oil, change the filter, and put the oil back in again?Possible to change oil filter without changing oil?
Do the full oil change. If you change just the filter you'll make a huge mess and lose a lot of your oil anyway.

Read the car manual to find out how much oil and what kind you need and buy that much and an oil pan and bucket and oil filter at the store.

Get out the wrenches, roll of paper towels, and all the other stuff you just bought. Take off the top oil cap (where you normally put in oil), put the oil pan under the car where the screw is for the oil and then loosen it and then hand undo the rest (watch out for the washer - don't let it drop!) and let it drain into the pan (this will take a few minutes.) Meanwhile use paper towels to wipe off the screw and washer. Set aside. Once it's drained, reach up under to where the oil filter is and undo this (this could be a little messy even with it drained) - you may need a special oil filter wrench to loosen this. Dispose of this. Put the screw and washer back in TIGHTLY. Get the new oil filter, put a thin coating of oil along the top where it screws in (use your finger to put this oil on) and then put it on where the old one came off of and screw it on as tight as you can. (You can use the wrench to make it tighter if you want.) Now you just add the new oil to the top. (Put in as much as your manual says to.) Run the car, and check the level to make sure it's okay. Add if needed.

    Voila! Oil changed.

Empty the oil pan into the bucket and take it to some place that recycles it.Possible to change oil filter without changing oil?
If you wish a new filter just remove the existing one and put on the new one. There will be some oil loss when you take off the filter, only a small amount, so have something to catch it, a large rag will do. You will need to add one quart of oil after the new filter is installed.
It would be advised that you do both. The filter catches the bad or dirty particles in the oil but it doesnt do it all. Also you may want to replace the pan and gasket if thats where the leak is coming from. With the car almost 20 yrs old, that gasket is probably worn out
    The oil can be changed without changing the oil. Be sure to check the oil level after changing the filter and starting the car. Since you're going to have to get under the car to do this, you might as well just drain the oil from the engine and do the job right with a full oil change%26gt;
Absolutely! I learned this back in the mid 60's. I drove a company truck (Chevrolet) for an older gentleman who NEVER changed oil. We put a LOT of miles on these trucks and ended with over 200,000miles.

He said that the oil doesn't break down, it just needs to be cleaned. We would change the filter (the oil was black), add the new filter and a quart of oil. After driving 2/300 miles you could pull the dipstick and the oil would be as clean as new oil from the can.
You do not need to drain the oil to change the filter. Just replace the filter, start the engine let it idle for a moment, shut it off and add oil to the high mark on the dipstick.
You're going to have a big mess and waist a lot of your good oil if you pull the filter without draining it first.

You can reuse the same oil if you make sure your drain pan is clean and no debris falls into it while you're down there removing the drain plug.
