Im trying to change the oil in my 2002 Saturn SL2 and can't seem to find the oil filter. Where is it located? thanks for the help!Where is the oil filter located on a 2002 Saturn SL2?
If I'm thinking of the right engine it is probably the horizontally mounted filter. Pop the hood and you should be able to find it.

Do I need a oil filter wrench to change oil on 2008 Mazda3?

Going to change oil on this car for the first time. Do i need a wrench to get the oil filter off, or can I use any old filter wrench?? Also don't need a gauge to put it back on do I?Do I need a oil filter wrench to change oil on 2008 Mazda3?
you may need a specific wrench, or oil filter cap/cup, to remove the filter, depending on engine size. If my memory serves me correctly some of engines in the Mazda3 are the type that take a cartridge filter instead of a regular spin on filter. Check to see which filter you have before deciding what wrench to buy. hope this helps!Do I need a oil filter wrench to change oil on 2008 Mazda3?
I don't know what filter wrench you want to use but I use a plier type filter wrench to get the filter off, it fits in any filter. The brand is imperial, here is a picture http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0WTeff2Z35Ibk鈥?/a> . One thing to remember is to NEVER TIGHTEN THE FILTER WITH THE WRENCH.

Lawn mower leaks gas on top of motor. The oil filter is soaked with gas. How can I fix this problem.?

I have a craftsman walk behind lawn mower. There is gas on top of the engine and the oil filter is soaked with gas. I need some suggestions on how to fix this problem. ThanksLawn mower leaks gas on top of motor. The oil filter is soaked with gas. How can I fix this problem.?
try putting a cork or rubber gasket in the gas tank cap or if the tank is leaking it's self you can use redkote gas tank liner sealer.Lawn mower leaks gas on top of motor. The oil filter is soaked with gas. How can I fix this problem.?
Are you sure it's the ';oil'; filter thats gas saturated or the air filter?

If it is the air filter, sounds like the float for the needle valve is sticking allowing the carburator to overflow and spill gas into the air filter. The carb must be dissasembled, throughly cleaned and reassembled, and a new air filter installed. All the parts needed to work on Craftsman equipment can be found at Sears.com

By clicking on the parts tab, typing in your model # it will show the diagram and parts list for your machine.
the gasket must be out of it find a cork board from the hardware store or some other kind of gasket material

Tranny clunking during shifting after oil & filter change?

99 Alero. Changed tranny fluid and filter, now tranny has a ';clunk'; when it shifts. Auto zone said to add 7 qts when doing this change. High milege car, 140,000. Just changed out engine with a lower mileage one. Thanks!Tranny clunking during shifting after oil %26amp; filter change?
well I have a question to ask and also a few things to look at for you. Question would be what engine do you have. there is two types of transmissions that you could have depending on engine size. the 2.2l and 2.4l used the 4T40E and the 3.4l used the 4T45E transmission. both use the same case and various internal parts, but there are some differences between them. If i remember correctly you should have had to take the fluid pressure pipes off to release the filter from its location. A common problem is that sometimes the o rings that are in there get dropped or cut when reinstalling them into there correct location again. You may have to drop the transpan again and check the pressure pipes to find out which one has a broken or missing o ring seal on it. good luck with the repair.Tranny clunking during shifting after oil %26amp; filter change?
Make sure you used the proper Fluid, best to get it from GM dealer.

What kind of Oil, Oil Filter, Antifreeze to buy?

I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L V8

If I was to change the oil myself, in general, what kind of oil, oil filter should I buy?

Also, I need to add more engine coolant. What kind of engine coolant typically is best for this kind of truck? The antifreeze that's in there now is green...

Thank You!What kind of Oil, Oil Filter, Antifreeze to buy?
antifreeze is green.

10w30

check parts store for filter #What kind of Oil, Oil Filter, Antifreeze to buy?
I personally use ';Prestone'; coolant, dilutted 50/50 with

water, and a ';Fram'; oil filter with a quality 10w30 oil.

Prestone coolant is green, make sure you dilute it 50/50

with water. You can also buy the coolant already pre-mixed

for you. It will say pre-mixed 50/50.
It's probably not worth doing yourself. You won't save that much. And you should NEVER dump antifreeze down storm drains.

The easy way to do this if you do want to do it yourself, is to go to your local National Chain Auto Supply store like Napa, tell them what you have and they will look everything up for you.

There are different ';weights'; of oil for different seasons and the age of your engine does play a small role in Oil Selection.

Spend extra on a quality filter as the filter does the real job of protecting your engine if you miss recommended oil changes.
Green coolant. Oil depends on your climate. If you are not in the ';Great White'; North, I'd use a diesel oil. Any 15W-40 will keep that engine spinning until the wheels fall off.
READ OWNERS MANUAL THIS WILL TELL YOU WHICH PRODUCT IS BEST FOR YOUR CAR TYPE.

Am I supposed to oil the seal on the oil filter before I put it on?

I change my oil at home and I was told that you are supposed to oil the seal on the filter before you tighten it on to ensure a proper seal. Is this true?Am I supposed to oil the seal on the oil filter before I put it on?
Yes, you should. I just dip my finger into a bottle of oil and then run it around the seal until the seal is coated. It is also a good idea to fill your new oil filter about half full with new oil before you install it. This helps get the oil moving through your car's oiling system.Am I supposed to oil the seal on the oil filter before I put it on?
Yes, if you rub a light coating of oil on the seal it will allow it to slide better when you tighten it. This will prevent the seal from grabing and kinking and possibly causing a leak.

Even using a little of the old oil will work since you will have that handy under the car when putting the new filter on.
Yes, you should apply a light coat of oil to the seal. I also fill the oil filter half way when applicable, before installing it. This is not possible with filters that mount upside down. But you can put a little oil in the filter even if it mounts side ways. It helps a bit against dry starts after changing the oil.
Yes. Just put a little oil on your finger and run it around the seal. That will ensure the rubber doesn't bind anywhere as its being tightened, causing it to leak. Besure and visually inspect for leaks after you pressure up the system the first time.
yep that,s true and another thing you can do if you can and that,s fill the oil filter before installing it. that helps the oil pump out when you first start it.
well it only helps when it comes time to remove it but you dont have to do it and you never over tighten them just use one hand is all you need oil it or not doesnt matter but ive alway have never hurts to do it like everyone else
Yes that is true. This will prevent problems with getting the filter off the next time you change the oil.
if you don't you'll have a bit of a problem getting the filter off next time you change the oil.
You better. If you want to get the oil filter off next time.

People are not aware of how much pressure an engine creates.

You will find out if you don't
yes a shall amount of oil just with your finger tip also it should be clean oil not dirty oil
Just put a very light coating of fresh oil on the casket and you'll be ok.
Yes, Clean oil only!!
yes, or what works better is a light coat of wheel bearing grease.

  • Kawasaki 750, 1983- How do you change the oil/filter and where are they located.?

Baught a Kawasaki 750 twin from 1983. No owners manual. Im a new biker, and I want to learnKawasaki 750, 1983- How do you change the oil/filter and where are they located.?
Its been along time since I worked on one of those bikes, but, if I remember correctly the filter (cartridge type, not spin on) is located under the left engine side cover (the one that covers the front sprocket). Excuse me if I am wrong, like I said its been awhile.

Is it normal for the oil filter gasket to come off automatically and be attached to the oil filter?

when removing it? I hear people talking about making sure to remove the old gasket from the old filter but when I took the oil filter off, the gasket was still on the oil filter. Is it normal for the oil filter gasket to come off automatically and be attached to the oil filter?
99.9% of the time the gasket will stick to the filter because it has tabs that hold it in place and the block is a smooth machined surface. Is it normal for the oil filter gasket to come off automatically and be attached to the oil filter?
Often times if a thin film of oil isn't put on the new gasket, it will stick to the block when the filter is removed. If a new filter is ';double gasketed'; - it will leak - maybe not immediately - but at the most inconvenient place and time, the additional gasket will blow out of place and empty the crankcase in short order.
Absolutely normal, they're glued on at the factory, the replacement filter should show this 2b true
yes it is normal make sure to rub some fresh oil on the seal and it will always come off.
    Yes

no oil filter on old vw'sWhat oil filter do I need for a 1968 VW Beetle?
Your car does not have a replaceable oil filter. It has an oil screen in the bottom of the pan which needs to be removed, cleaned and reinstalled.

Adapters for standard spin-on oil filters are commonly available for these engines and are highly recommended. If your car has had one of these installed you would need to check what type of filter it has in order to determine the correct replacement.
There is no external oil filter on the old bugs there is a screen inside where you drain the oil you will see a round plate with 10mm bolts drop this to get the screen out.
Only has a screen above the oil plug and generally never needs replaced, If damaged you can get thru NAPA or WORLD PARTS

    Hi

The unit you're referring to is the oil cooler, and it is very highly likely held in place by either an allen bolt right up the center of it, or a thin nut screwed onto the threaded post onto which the oil filter screws, both of which are accessible after first removing the oil filter.

The seal is a rubber O ring.

    Regards

    Geordie
If you are talking about the seal behind the lump of metal that the oil filter screws onto, then its dead easy to do. Make sure you have drained the engine oil first before loosening the bolts that hold it in place.

    Ja.

Why would the oil filter on my Saturn Vue be so loose?

I was driving my 05 Saturn Vue last night and the oil light came on. I check the engine and it appeared oil was leaking around the upright filter area. The filter seemed very loose and I was able to turn the filter with my hands, which should be impossible given its location. I changed the oil over 2000 miles ago myself and I am sure the filter was properly tightened down. What could have caused it to loosen up like that? The engine was about two quarts low.Why would the oil filter on my Saturn Vue be so loose?

Would a wrong oil filter damage the car?

The other day I changed my oil, and I put in an oil filter made for a ford, but it was a bit shorter than the one in my car. Would that hurt my car at all? BTW, its a 96 ford taurus.Would a wrong oil filter damage the car?
I wish that you'd have given up the brand name and part number of the filter that you have purchased.

My only concern would be if it had an anti-drainback valve. The two Motorcraft filters that fit your car are a # FL-400S - for the 12 valve 3.0 motor and a FL-820S for the 24 valve Duratec engine.

If you live near a Walmart they have these two Motorcraft filters made by Purolater in stock.

I've noticed that a few companies are shortening up their filters which is a bad thing if you plan on a 5,000 mile oil change and do a lot of stop and go driving. Less square inches of filtering media will plug up faster causing the bypass valve to open thus no filtration.

At this time If I owned your car I'd first find out by going back where you bought the filter if it had the anti-drainback valve. This valve prevents dry engine starts. If it has the valve, short change the engine oil @ 3,000 miles and use a top shelf NAPA (Wix) Purolater or the standard Motorcraft filters. When ever in doubt and you have the space always go with the longest standard filter possible. Never cheat filtration area. Leave Fram filters on the shelf to collect more dust. When you go to any NAPA store they have a display of a Fram and a Wix (NAPA) filter split open. Let your eyes be the judge.Would a wrong oil filter damage the car?
No it won't hurt the car at all.

I got Hooker headers on my 69 mustang and could still use the original size motor-craft oil filter.

My buddy with a 71 Mach I used a cheaper brand of headers. He had to start using an aftermarket filter that was a lot shorter than the motor-craft. It worked fine.
You can use any filter that's made as long as it not leaking when fitted (if it fits) its better to get shorter and wider then longer and thinner especially when its located beneath the car,
The height is not as big as a concern. As long as the sealing gasket is seated on the oil filter mounting plate you should be fine. For instance Chevy changed the filter size on a very common filter from long to short and they would not do that unless it was ok to do so.

When doing an oil change can the oil filter be changed first before draining the oil?

Can the oil filter be changed before draining the oil through the oil plug? Does the order matter? Or is this going to cause all the oil in the car to go through the oil filter? I wouldn't want that to happen.

What if the oil filter was mounted on the side of the engine block? Will all of the oil still come out?

Honda Civic 95 LxWhen doing an oil change can the oil filter be changed first before draining the oil?
It's best to drain all the oil you can through the drain plug. Once that's done, then remove the oil filter and drain the rest of it.

The reason is because it's much easier to catch the draining oil if it comes out of the drain plug because the oil filter is mounted higher than the drain pan. You'd have to remove the drain plug anyway to get the rest of the oil out, so why not use gravity to your advantage?

Make sure you open up the oil cap (under the hood where you add more oil), it will drain much faster that way. When doing an oil change can the oil filter be changed first before draining the oil?
Yes. it is quite clear to the senses of every man. The oil filter is also be changed while draining out the oil from the car. Good luck
you drain the oil plug then unscrew filter

Is it ok to not change my oil filter when I change my oil?

I have an 07 Civic SI and getting the filter off is impossible for me. So either I'm going to take it to a shop to change the filter or is it ok to not change it until my next oil change? Is it ok to not change my oil filter when I change my oil?
I wouldn't take the chance especially with a high revving engine. The oil filter could become clogged and cause severe engine damage due to lack of lubrication. A bypass valve will open thou, if the filter clogs but then unfiltered oil will be flowing through the engine; which could block a bearing causing again, severe engine damage. You have a nice car, treat it well and do the proper maintenance. Is it ok to not change my oil filter when I change my oil?
Most owners manuals will tell you to change the filter every other oil change. I believe this is done to make the total maintenance cost of the vehicle to appear low. In reality, why would you want to chance it. A clogged oil filter will go into by-pass mode, which means it will no longer filter the oil, but will still allow it to flow. This will just circulate dirty motor oil in the engine that will cause more damage.
you dont absolutely have to, but then your new clean oil will not get cleaned as effectively because the old burnt oil is partially clogging the filter. there has to be some way of getting that thing off without giong to a shop. if you do have to bring it to a shop, go to rapid oil change or a valvoline and see what they do to remove it. it will run you under $25 and than you can do it yourself from now on. cheers
well i hear some people say you only change it every other oil change but i've always changed the filter every oil change, no need to be cheap, what you need is an oil filter wrench, you can get one from a parts store, might ask someone and say what car you got so they can get one that will fit best since they make different size wrenches, the wrench just kinda wraps around the filter itself
Why would you change your oil and not the filter? The filter does exactly what it says. Filters the oil. Its like washing your clothes and not using detergent. If your oil is dirty enough to change then you need to do the filter as well.
With modern engines it is far better to change both the oil and filter because of the higher mileages between services. Buy a cheap oil filter spanner and you will find it easy to get the filter off.
some people say it,s ok to change the filter every other time but if you do that then all your doing is keeping some of the dirty oil in it.
Now you will have change the oil again when you change

the filter that should have been changed.

Do you have to change the oil filter on a 95 Honda Civic Lx every oil change?

Is it necessary? Or is it every other oil change?Do you have to change the oil filter on a 95 Honda Civic Lx every oil change?
On the newer Hondas the dash display will tell you when your car is due for an oil change. It will display codes ';A'; or ';B';. ';A'; is for oil change and ';B'; is for oil and filter. At our dealership we ignore the ';A'; and always change the filter with the oil. The previous answers all make good points. As long as your under the car, you might as well change it.Do you have to change the oil filter on a 95 Honda Civic Lx every oil change?
You should change the oil filter every time you change the oil, no matter what kind of car it is. This is because the filter gets clogged with debris and can't clean the oil effectively once it's dirty. The filter also holds some old oil that isn't completely removed when you drain the oil from the engine.

A new oil filter is only about $4 anyway, so if you don't change it you're not really saving a whole lot of money. I mean I'm pretty cheap, but I'm not THAT cheap.
You don't ';have'; to change the oil filter every oil change, but it is recommended. While you're at it you might as well do it properly.
Well yes, why change part of the oil?
only if its getting the oil changed haha
    No, every single one...
buy a filter wrench and change the filter already
I believe that it is every oil change
Ya i would just to be safe. it reallly not that hard and it will help out your engine too. =D

Am i suppose to turn the oil filter clockwise or counter clockwise to take it off?

    counter clockwise

lefty loosy righty tighteyAm i suppose to turn the oil filter clockwise or counter clockwise to take it off?
Drain your oil. Stick a screwdriver through the old oil filter and twist counter clockwise. It works and your going to throw it the old filter out anyway. But do rub the new filter seal with some new oil and put it on before you fill the oil again. Tighten the oil pan screw also before you refill.Am i suppose to turn the oil filter clockwise or counter clockwise to take it off?
Counter clockwise it probably has tightened with the heat of the engine since the last time it was changed.
when you put back on put some of the old oil on the rubber that is on the filter so it will not leak...rub it on with your finger
    Loosen counterclockwise and tighten clockwise.

  • I changed my oil but I could not get the old oil filter off. What will this do to my car?

I know you are supposed to change your oil filter every time you change your oil, but I could not get the oil filter off. So, I put clean oil into my car and left the old filter. How long can I drive my car like this? What do I do now?I changed my oil but I could not get the old oil filter off. What will this do to my car?
Did you have the correct tool to remove it? If not, do you have a LONG big screwdriver? If you have a 18'; inch long, 1/4'; thick huge flatblade screwdriver, you can punch it thru the oil filter with a hammer, then forcibly spin it off. Better make sure you A) have the new filter FIRST, and B) it's Friday night, so you have time to get help if still is a problem (because you'll have TWO holes in your filter, and it'll be stuck ... but usually this trick works, you get tons more leverage with a screwdriver thru it).

I'd not drive it too much longer, but you can probably drive it a few thousand more if you had to. I've driven much many more miles than 3k on an oil filter. NOT a good idea, but you can do it. Just hope the filter doesn't stop up before you change it. BIG problems then!I changed my oil but I could not get the old oil filter off. What will this do to my car?
It won't clean your new oil effectively and will recirculate whatever breaks loose from the old element.

I would buy a wrench to get that old filter off, if that doesn't work an old leather belt with a strong buckle should do the trick of space is a concern.

definitely replace the filter and new oil.
must be change soon ok maybe for one oil change if not very dirty, remember after the filter gets so dirty that oil will not be filtered then it will bypass the filter. Same as no filter
Think about it logically for a second. You left about one-half quart of dirty oil in the engine and added at least four to five and a half quarts of clean oil, right? I wouldn't worry about it too much, but remember to have the the filter changed next time you have an oil change done (like in 3,000 miles or three months).
A good oil filter wrench is a necessity in this situation. There are those that wrap around the filter, and those that grasp from the end of the filter.

If you use the screwdriver method, be sure and have a pan under the filter first, the oil will drain out of the filter.

You can go through to you next oil change time with the old filter. Just do not go any longer.
Well depending on how often you change your oil you could go two oil changes in 3,000 mile intervals with the same filter I have done that before and i did not have a problem although you should not do this on a regualr basis. I do not know what kind of car you have but get a oil filter wrench they make adjustable ones there like big pliers that have teeth that when the handels are pressed together it grabs the filter to remove it or well loosen it enhough to do by hand. The wrench is pretty inexpensive and can be purchased at a local parts store.
don't trip it won't hurt anything.

just buy the filter wrench before your next oil change and change it then.

What are the substances being filtered and what are the residues for air filter and oil filter?

The air filter is mainly just dirt and dust in the air. The oil filter also dirt and minute metal particles from normal engine wear. The oil suspends the chemical pollutants and that is why you need to change it often. What are the substances being filtered and what are the residues for air filter and oil filter?
dust in an air filter and bacteria in an oil filter

Does the oil filter on a 2003 Passat come out counter clock wise?

I'm having a really hard time taking out the oil filter so I'm wandering if maybe it comes out counter clock wise.Does the oil filter on a 2003 Passat come out counter clock wise?
Every spin on filter, tighten clockwise, loosen counterclockwise. Make sure you use nothing but synthetic oil in that Passat, for some reason these models use have a lower oil sump capacity than equivalent engines in the Jetta/ Golf and are heavier cars. Synthetic is a must.Does the oil filter on a 2003 Passat come out counter clock wise?
do you have an oil wrench on it and do you turn it at all? Generally, oil filters are counter clockwise out and clockwise in. I've never seen it any other way. Did you put the last one in? I wouldn't be too frightened about messing anything up, put a oilfilter wrench on it and turn it off.

Any tips or tricks for applying a new oil filter?

For a 4cyl honda dohc engine, the oil filter that I have on there now is very old and the oil has been sitting for over 2 months. After I remove the old filter, is there any way to clean or flush out the area on the head where the oil filter attaches?

Also, is there any prep that is needed for the new oil filter before I attach it?

How tight should I twist the new oil filter when I apply it.

ThanksAny tips or tricks for applying a new oil filter?
Make sure the gasket came off with the old filter. Wipe down the base with a clean rag and don't worry about a little oil. Just make sure the surface contact is clean. Use a little

new oil on your finger and swish it around the top of the new gasket. Apply till the filter seats then give it a furn till its snug.

You don't need to wrench it tight. Just good and snug and maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 extra turn extra. The gasket will swell when the engine heats up. Start the car up and check for leaks.. Take your time. There may be some old oil dripping from the removal. After you'r sure it's not leaking ( and all is cooled off.) you can wipe it all down with a rag again. No need to really blast it with a hose. Just clean it up as best you can.

    Hope this helps..

Remember, you're going to have to take that filter off again some day and you'll appreciate not overtightening it with

a wrench to seat it.Any tips or tricks for applying a new oil filter?
You don't need to clean or prep the area, just make sure the O-ring remains with the old filter %26amp; not with the engine. Dab your finger in fresh oil and smear some on the rubber seal of the new filter.

I stopped using a filter wrench to tighten filters; unless you have small arms, get it tight by hand only. Unless you have huge arms, you can't overtighten by hand, so knock yourself out!

It's tight enough if it doesn't leak, so after you've added oil; start the car, look for leaks, run it for about 30-45 seconds and rev it up to 2-3000 RPM's for several seconds.
just take a rag and wipe off where the filter goes, put some oil around the filter gasket, run it up on, until it contacts, finish tighten it (hand only)about a 3/4 turn to a full turn, that should be enough. by the way, if you can, fill the filter up with oil, before you put it on, that will help the pump out.
    take theold filter off

get a rag and wipe the area clean--make sure the old filters rubber gasket is not stuck on there.

get the new filter and oil the rubber gaskets rim

put the new filter on --hand tighten --firmly

    but hand tighten only

    fill the car with oil

    run the motor

make sure the new filter doesnt leak
dont worry about old oil on head ....put some motor oil on rubber ring on new filter (this will aid in taking it off for next change....hand tighten the new filter only, dont use the wrench

  • 2001 Chevy Lumina - hard to get to the oil filter to change. Do I have to jack the car up?

Just bought a new (used) 2001 Lumina. My old truck, I could change the oil filter easy. Do I have to jack up the car and get underneath to change the oil filter? Advice, webpages, or links would be helpful.2001 Chevy Lumina - hard to get to the oil filter to change. Do I have to jack the car up?
Sure most cars require you to lif them up so that you can get under and to the Oil Filter as wells as the Drain bolt... make sure it is a steady and stable lift...if you are just using a jack... a set of stands are a good idea too or...

Might be best if you spend $20 and get a set of cars ramps... i have them and they are much easier to use when i need under my truck and car.

If you were real clever, you would use Mobil One with a Mobil One filter. Read your owner's manual. It will tell you what specification oil to use. Make sure the oil was designed to be used in GM cars!! With the Mobil One, you will save money on gas, and only need to change it once yearly. Use the ';0w'; rated oil to do this!!

How do you remove an oil filter if you crushed it while taking it off with an oil filter wrench?

It's actually a fuel filter for a John Deere 4020 tractor - but it's basically the same thing - same size, comes off the same way. Crushed it at the very top (where it screws into the tractor). How do you remove an oil filter if you crushed it while taking it off with an oil filter wrench?
    This can be difficult!

Try a strap wrench, if you have not already. When I switched to using a strap wrench instead of an oil filter wrench, things went a lot smoother.

Drive a screwdriver through the body of the filter and turn.

If you tear up the filter enough, you'll be down to its bottom plate. The problem is that the gasket is stuck. Use pliers to pull up on the edges of the bottom plate and un-stick the gasket.

Be careful not to scratch the surface the gasket seats on, and be careful not to cut yourself on the sharp metal edges.

To keep this from happening, before you put the oil filter on, oil the seal with fresh oil, AND just hand tighten it until it is snug, don't tighten it as hard as you can.How do you remove an oil filter if you crushed it while taking it off with an oil filter wrench?
Jam a screwdriver through it and twist!
    TNT!
Find a wrench called a strap wrench. Plummer use them or go by sears, home depot,Lowes this wrench will work!!
try the previously mentioned screwdriver trick-or simply use a strap-wrench.
    Strap wrench
Man you could have think of better things to screw .. why filter?
1.A big pair of waterpump pliers.

    2. Drive a screw driver thru it and turn.

    3. Cut it off as close to the engine as possible and chisel it in the counter clockwise direction until you can tirn it.

Put plenty of fresh diesel on the gasket when reinstalling it. Do not over tighten. (buy a filter with a place for a socket if possible).
I feel compelled to try to help you as you do have some good answers here one thing is being put to the side here...

You are dealing with a ';Fuel'; filter, Not a ';Oil filter'; and the driving of a screw driver or any other object thru this filter could possibly cause a spark which could cause you a fire....

The strap wrench is one very good idea, then maybe carefully prying up the edges of the filter to try and release some of the pressure being applied to the gasket holding it tight.

You could use the the trick of an chisel on it which also works very well but use a brass chisel so there are no sparks or being very careful use a metal one but only if the area around you is free of any fuel....

Good Luck.....and be safe, It will come off!

    Mike
did you destroy the threads? if not all you need to do is get something in there to tourque it... maybe get a plumbers wrench and go at it... if the threads are destroyed you might want to take it in to avoid damaging the fitting on the tractor.
    Man you are screwed!
well now that its crushed you may be able to get a better grip on it...

take a rag and clean the filter so there's no greese. put a rag on the filter and try to fit the wrench. it's like opening a jar lid with a rag...if you have one of those grip rags that you open jars with that's even better.
if you can reach it , and you should be able to on a tractor , shove a large screwdriver through the filter and turn it with that. I have had the same problem and it worked for me,
you need to take it to someone who knows what they are doing, but since you can't, call a who is stronger than you to have it removed.
I second the idea of the screwdriver, it worked once for me, just don't use a small one.
Screwdriver or large slip joint pliers
    Remember: Lefty loosey; righty tighty.
If you can get the whole metal shell of filter off. Go to an auto parts store. Napa, auto zone etc. Explain to them what happened and they should point you to a tool that has 4 prongs on it and wil fit in the holes on the filter base and unscrew it that way.
UH YA SORRY SCREWED I WOULD GUESS
i am going to go with the general consenus. i have many times used a screwdriver to get one off. just pop it thru the case and twist. works everytime

For a motorcycle, do i have to change the oil filter everytime i change the oil?

Im guessing I do because the oil filter will just dirty the new oil, but im not sure. For a motorcycle, do i have to change the oil filter everytime i change the oil?
Most manufacturers recommend changing the filter only every 2nd oil change. Most people (me included) ignore this directive and change the filter every time the oil is changed.

If you don't change the filter, the small amount of oil that remains in the filter is not going to have much impact by way of contaminating the new oil. A dirty oil filter itself will not contaminate the new oil: either it isn't clogged, in which case it filters out bad stuff from the oil or it is clogged in which case it gets bypassed. For a motorcycle, do i have to change the oil filter everytime i change the oil?
It's cheap insurance, but if the PITA aspect of it causes you to wait too long, then skip it every other time. I know you can dump the oil in my GSXR without touching the plastic, but you need to take off one side of the lower to get to the filter. I have done a filterless change before, but the oil actually wasn't due for a change yet anyway. In my Buell, it takes about 30 seconds to change the filter, so that always gets changed with the oil.

    So....

You don't HAVE to do it, but in a perfect world, you would. If you are in a pinch and having to change the filter means the oil change isn't going to get done? Just dump the oil and don't stress about it.

You really can't go wrong following the manufactures service advice.
If there are enough contaminants in your filter to require replacing at every oil change (beyond the first change after running in or after fitting a new engine) there is a problem with the engine which is beyond an oil change to repair or contain. Keep an eye on the contents of the filter, but there is no mechanical need to replace it except for peace of mind.
My manual says every other time, but I normally change every time. Cheap insurance I figure. If you buy el-cheapo filters, then you definitely should. One cheap brand (Emgo or something like that) has a warning printed on the box that you should change the filter every 1500 miles. That's between oil changes! I go with OEM filters, they cost more but I know they're quality products.
i would you are probley asking this question because the manual says to only change the oil at 4000 miles because you changed the oil filter out at 600 miles i would still change the oil filter it is like taking a **** and not wiping get what im saying just do the oil filter with the oil change all the time
Yes - for any engine that has an oil filter, it should be changed with the oil. It contains oil and crud it's collected, not changing it would compromise the quality of the change itself.
Yeah you change out the filter everything you change the oil.. depending on when you change it is actually up to how much you ride.. and the type of oil you run from convention to syn. but usually around 3,000 mi is it..
it is highly recommended. of course, no one can force you to do it. the filter is not that expensive, so for peace of mind, I think it's worth it.
especially if it's a bike that the clutch runs in oil.

and besides it's cheap insurance, especially on a small

    engine.
absolutely, what could it possibly harm by doing so
Yes, and you should change your oil every 3000 to 5000 miles.
You do not have to but you should.
    I always do.
for peace of mind, just change it.,

How do you change the oil filter on an oil burner (boiler) ?

find oil filter canister,(also turn off valve that shuts oil from flowing to burner at the tank) usually where oil feeds out of tank or near burner itself... then take wrench, unscew the top nut(which is actually a LONG bolt) till you can pull it out. Cover will be sealed with gasket, simply tap it a few times or pry it off but dont spill the oil....(I usually do this over a large old drain pan so If I spill its ok)

after cover is off, scream and say ack when you pull the gunky old filter out...and replace it with new one...then put new gasket and cover back on, insert screw and putit in straight so the threads will catch....and re tighten boltHow do you change the oil filter on an oil burner (boiler) ?
Follow the manufacturers instructions. Use replacement parts recommended by the manufacturer. Obviously the unit would have to be isolated and shut down prior to replacing the filter else the oil or fluid would splash in your face. How do you change the oil filter on an oil burner (boiler) ?
On any tanks that I have seen at one end of the tank is a canister with a nut at the top. the filter is in there.

There should be a valve to shut the oil off next to the tank.

Work it back %26amp; forth to loosen it %26amp; that helps it to close better

Loosen the nut on the canister %26amp; remove the filter,

Have something to catch the dripping.

Let the filter drip dry, Then take it to a good harware store for a replacement.

You took it apart so You reverse the steps.
Find where the filter is. At the bottom of the canister is a bolt. Simply unscrew the bolt, take the cannister out which will be full of fuel oil, dump it, pull the filter out, put in the new one, then assemble back together.
Shut off the supply line , remove and replace.
Do You have a shut off? Shut off the oil use a pan and change the filter.

The tranny started lurching at 50-60mph. Possible problems? My Crown Vic was leaking oil by the oil filter. It was fixed during oil change, 2k miles later more leaking Y?
probably a careless oil changer person did not install the new filter properly. they are only concerned with speed. take it to a ford dealer not a cheapy garage. trans could be low fluid or adjustment. My Crown Vic was leaking oil by the oil filter. It was fixed during oil change, 2k miles later more leaking Y?
you better tighten up the oil filter or get a new one, the tranny is not lurching, the low oil switch is shutting the motor down, to prevent the motor from blowing up because of low oil!
    check the oil pressure switch

What is the purpose of a check valve on an oil filter?

Check valves keep fluids from flowing in the wrong direction. For a car oil filter, it keeps the engine lubricated and helps to prevent crud from going back into it.

Wal-mart has ';computers'; that allow you to select your car and tell you what filters to purchase. If you go to an auto parts store they will be able to help select a filter for you.

Be sure to know if your vehicle is 2 or 4 wheel drive and your engine size (2.5, 2.7, or 3.5L).What is the purpose of a check valve on an oil filter?
It is so the oil doesn't run back out of the filter, thus ensuring that when you re-start your vehicle, you will have oil flowing immediately, instead of having to wait for the filter to re-fill before it starts oiling the system again. What is the purpose of a check valve on an oil filter?
it,s there so there is oil in the filter at all times.

My dad needs to know so that he can change it. He can't find it anywhere right now.

Please Help!Where is the oil filter on a 2007 Camry Hybrid?
The location should be in the manual, in the maintenance section. There should be a drawing there. But some manuals, like those for certain European cars, don't include this info.

It's a spin-on filter, so it should be easy to find. Check under the car by the engine. If not, check under the hood.Where is the oil filter on a 2007 Camry Hybrid?
It is right next to pearl harbor
you may have to go to the dealership to get that part, although I've never heard of a parts store not carrying an oil filter for all makes and models of vehicles. if a parts store dosen't have one, they can either order one, or you can buy the book on the make and model of what ever vehicle you have, look up oil filter in there, and it should tell you where to get one.

Where is the oil filter located on a mini cooper S, 2005?

Trying to do my own tune up, not sure where on the engine the oil filter is located. Also if anyone is familiar, how have you gotten to the oil pan plug to drain. I was thinking of jacking the car up but then it isn't level. Any suggestions? Oh, and one more thing, it isn't clear where the air filter is on the engine either, can someone advise? Thanks in advance.Where is the oil filter located on a mini cooper S, 2005?
suggest you purchase the Bentley manual for you Mini. It will make doing your own tune up/repairs much easier and answer just about any Q you may come across. If you open the bonnet the oil fill is next to the power steering fluid fluid filler. It will say right on top of the oil fill cap. You will need 5 qts of synthetic oil. The oil filter is a bit hidden on the passenger side and you will need a 36mm short socket to remove it. Use only Mini oil filter replacement available at the bmw/mini dealership. There is a O ring as well that comes with the replacement. Don't reuse the old one and rub a bit of oil on the new one to prevent binding. Also make sure you don't cross thread when replacing. The filter can only go in one way. For the drain plug you will need a 13mm 6 point socket. Its located in the front (underneath) center of the car. You can jack up the passenger side if you want or need to. The air filter is next to the ECU on the drivers side. You will need to remove the clamp and retaining screws to get to the filter. Hope that helps but seriously look into purchasing the manual, you will be glad you did.

Why would an oil filter have many dents on it?

When I removed the old oil filter there was alot of dents. Could it be from rocks? Why would an oil filter have many dents on it?
Oil filters are attached with wrenches that squeeze the outside area and someone might have squeezed that tightly knowing it doesn't really matter if its squeezed.

Or it could have been rocks or road debree from driving. Oil filters are put in clear, accessible areas under your engine so you can get to them easily. Nothing covers them and they just sit right at the bottom. A gravel road could leave you quite dented. Why would an oil filter have many dents on it?
oil filters are attached by being hand tightened. :) more than likely if your oil filter is attached near the bottom of your engine block, it was hit with rocks thrown by your very mean tires.
it could be that someone tried to get it off and could,nt so they left it on.

You can call any ford dealer and ask for the parts department. They will be able to tell you what it's called. And give you a price. It will probably be high. If it's not a dealer only item you can get it cheaper at an auto parts store. Once you know what to ask for that is.What is the correct name for the two oil lines/hoses that run down to the oil filter on a 99 f250 light duty?
either oil cooler lines or most likely ';Oil filter relocation lines';. They used to put the filter directly on the block but i guess they thought it was safer to put it in the front fender where most accidents occur.
The lines located at the front bumper are most likely the oil cooler lines, One is a feed line and the other is a return line. It also may be a transmission cooler and the lines would be the same, a feed line and a return line.
