A filter wrench helps if you can't get a good enough grip on it to turn it by hand. They come as plier type, strap type, and a socket type that fits over the top.





In a pinch you can puncture the side of the can with a large screwdriver and use that to unscrew the filter.





Don't use a wrench when installing the new filter unless it comes with instructions stating otherwise.
