I have seen something that looks like a chainsaw chain that wraps arround the filter and it has a handle? what is this? or what else could i use? What are some tools that i can use to cut open an oil filter?
Why would you be cutting open a Oil Filter anyways.
Inside an oil filter is:
A primary full-flow filter is accompanied by a secondary bypass filter.
If the filtration element becomes completely clogged, this valve allows oil to bypass the filter, protecting the engine from oil starvation.
The valve may also open in very cold conditions if a high viscosity oil is used. What are some tools that i can use to cut open an oil filter?
Summit has a specific tool for this is like a big wheel pipe cutter. I would not use a hacksaw becausethe shavings of what you are cutting will get into the filter and you may get confused on whats what. the only real reason for cutting a filter is to inspect what is inside of the filter and make sure there isnt any engine damage. Its really the only way other then striping the motor completly down to see whats going on with bearing and pistons rings.
dude go to the parts store and buy a oil filter wrench they also sell oil filter wrenches at walmart. i wouldn't use anything else than a oil filter wrench. if you use anything else you could screw up the threads that your oil filter screws on to .
what you described is a filter wrench...used for taking a filter off the engine...if you want to cut it in half use a hacksaw
A stick of dynamite would do just fine, also good for fishing.....
that chainsaw looking thing is made for cutting exhaust tubing. specialized oil filter cutters are out there, just not very common. the easiest way i can think of is a good old fashioned hack saw. any way you do it though its going to get very messy.
us a air powered cut-off wheel, or a bandsaw.
