What tool is necessary to remove an oil filter?

I have a 2002 Civic. Is there a special tool required for this? What tool is necessary to remove an oil filter?
Oil filter wrench, or a strap wrench

If its really feisty, and doesn't want to come off, take a 10 inch punch or drift, drive it all the way through with a hammer, and twist it off...

More Top Contributor bullsh!t. God I wish they would suspend all Top Contributors. It is highly unlikely that you would be able to get an oil filter off by hand. They're dirty, sometimes greasy, and on your car, completely inaccessible from the top. In order to properly change the oil, the engine should be at least warmed up, so the filter and exhaust system are hot as well. You need to jack up the car and get under it to get to the oil filter. If you are comfortable with getting under the car, you will need an oil filter wrench to get a grip on the filter, because they tend to be hard to break loose after a few thousand miles. That is exactly why there are several different oil filter wrenches on the market. Make sure you get one that will fit the filter on your car.
If you can reach the filter you should be able to remove it by hand. If you cannot reach it by hand, Auto Zone has a tool that can remove any oil filter.
You need an oil filter wrench for that particular filter. Try Auto Zone.
You should be able to buy an oil filter wrench at any one of your local auto parts store that will fit your application.
