I've seen people religiously fill the new oil fiter until it can't fill anymore before installing it. And I've seen other people just install it straight out of the box. Of course both put oil in the oil resivoir, but I'm just curious if it matters if oil is in the filter before you install it or not? I've heared the first group say it that minimizes the air bubbles. Is that a load of crud? Or is it real, and it's good for the car?Is it better to have oil in the new oil filter before putting it on, or does it matter?
Fill the filter, depending on how it is mounted. If the filter is mounted horizontally, then it is pretty much impossible to fill the filter then screw it on without oil running out. If the filter is vertical, fill that thing up, if it is at an angle, fill accordingly so that it doesn't run back out, but that there is oil in the filter. It all depends on how the filter is mounted to the block. Of course, smear some fresh oil on the o-ring before installation of the new filter.
I agree with 45 Cal on this all the way! If you didn't fill the filter prior to installation, during the first start of the vehicle after the oil change, the oil pump has to FILL the filter with oil before oil is pumped to other parts of the motor. So you can have up to 10 seconds (or even more) of run time on the motor before it ever builds oil pressure. Not cool in my opinion.
On some vehicles you just can't, but if you can, fill it!Is it better to have oil in the new oil filter before putting it on, or does it matter?
Does it realy matter? If you put the correct amount in to the engine it fills the filter as and when it get's there. Changed hundreds of filters is the last 45 years and never pratted about like that.
Just smear oil on the seal face of the filter prior to fitting and screw it on.
On Diesel you have to as they hold a quart or more %26gt; Cars if it's installed up then do it if on it's side it leaks out%26gt; Most don't but why run the engine for a few seconds with out oil on the bearings??? Your call%26gt;
It is not necessary. Just be sure to put a coating of fresh oil on the new seal and do not overtighten it.
They are right. Service Manager for FireStone and we service thousands of cars, make sure you lube the gasket before installing but it's not a issue. Good Luck!
Putting oil in the filter is not necessary. Make sure you lubricate the rubber seal before installation.
lube the rubber seal and you'll be fine. it doesn't matter if you fill the filter or just put it up there.
if its an old rover v8 deffo pump hates airlocks
