I did my own oil change for the first time yesterday, and neglected to lube up the gasket and fill it up with some oil before I put it on my car.
What will I notice, if anything, having missed those two steps? What is the importance of lubricating the gasket of a new oil filter?
well dude, try having a shave without foam!! rips your skin off...so would rip the seal off the rubber gasket...the oil just lets the two glide together...and no friction....thus making a pure seal and no leaks...What is the importance of lubricating the gasket of a new oil filter?
first of all you cant fill up the filter with oil because when you turn it side ways to spin it on the threads, all the oil will come out, so that's OK [not] to fill it with oil ,so screw it on empty but next time put a little on your finger[ oil] that is and just run it around the black rubber seal on the filter so the next oil change at 3000 miles it will come off easy er
if you didnt do the oil on the rubber seal don't worry this time if you didnt wipe off the seal area on the engine then there is enough oil still on it so the next time you take off the filter it wont be that hard to do..
you lube it so that when you tighten it the rubber seal wont grab and kink up causing an oil leak. as to filling the filter 1st this was an old mechanics practice believing the engine was starved for oil too long when the oil reprimed after an oil change. most new cars dont even allow you to install them full as the filters are sideways! also there is potential for dirt etc to by pass the filter if you pre fill it so dont sweat pre filling.
oiling surface on housing, and seal on oil filter allows it to turn easily and tighten properly, -- otherwise it could cause the rubber seal to ';wrinkle'; a little bit, - causing a hole for oil to leak out through!, ---Or after engine has run, possibly seal will ';re-adjust'; with contraction and expansion, and straighten out ok, --( but leave it ';loose'; on housing causing leaks)!
If it is not leaking after a couple runs of engine , you are ok! Just do it right next time and avoid possibility of problems!
filling it does not matter just check oil level before starting veh. as for lube gasket it just makes a better seal so when tightening it you do not damage seal look for oil or dirt streaks on side of filter or around area where filter is if you got both %26amp; oil level has dropped after running engine then replace filter just take clean oil wipe it on gasket a thin layer will be good enough
All of the above AND it helps keep the gasket from fusing/sticking to either surface. When it comes time to change the filter again you will be able to simply remove the gasket. Without lube you may be left scraping and scrubbing it off before you can install a new one.
reduces friction when the seal turns against the flat, steel surface when you're tightening the filter. The reduction in friction keeps the o-ring from tweeking and allowing you to torque it to a higher value.
it helps give it a better seal
