What would happen if I put an oil filter for a 6 cylinder in a 4 cylinder motor?

Will it be ok to drive to the store and get the right one or will it be ok until my next oil change? What would happen if I put an oil filter for a 6 cylinder in a 4 cylinder motor?
Look everybody, its just a metal can, with threads, o rings and paper filter media.

The oil filter nor car engine knows the difference or cares what it was made for.

As long as the filter threads are the same and will screw onto the oil filter boss.

As along as the OD sealing sufrace is the same size as so it don't leak

And as long as the filter don't hit exhaust, block, oil pan, etc etc

You will be fine

I run a 454 BB 1 ton truck filter on my 350 SB camaro cause truck filter is 2 qt and camaro filter is 1/2 qtWhat would happen if I put an oil filter for a 6 cylinder in a 4 cylinder motor?
There are a few things that must match.

1. The threads.

2. The gasket seating surface.

I used to use a filter designed for a Ford V-8 on my Corolla (1972 1600). The car did not car, and it fit.

But on more modern cars, you don't have room all the time for a bigger filter.

As some one else said, if it leaks don't drive it.

If it does not leak, then the car will never know the difference.

I prefer a bigger filter because it has more surface area to do the job.
It may not fit. The diameter might be different. which would cause it to not seal correctly. Which would cause to to leak badly, which would result in low oil pressure. Which would be very bad. My suggestion. Just get the correct one.
As long as it seals properly, you can use it, but if it does not seal right, you will blow all the oil out of the engine in less than a mile.
well as long as the V6 filter dont leak on the 4 cyl then just add a little bit more oil to make up for the extra volume and forget it. It will filter the same and just hold a little more oil thats it.
It will not be okay. Your check engine light might come on. If it does, it will most likely be the id10t error, double check to see if it is. Once you confirm it, everything will work out.
it will be ok as long as you keep the oil level up. and your oil pressure will be down.
that depends on the type of car. but i would not risk it.
