What would happen to the engine if you had a blocked oil filter?

what would happen to the engine if you had a blocked oil filter??What would happen to the engine if you had a blocked oil filter?
if your filter becomes blocked it has a bypass valve to direct your oil flow around it. If it is a petrol engine then hope you don't have any large particles in your oil or it could cause damage as it can't be filtered out any more. Some Diesels have another filter which will still filter about 1/3 of your oil (by-pass filter). What would happen to the engine if you had a blocked oil filter?
Bye bye engine. It would cause a loss of oil pressure and lubrication for the engine, which would result in engine seizure.
When the filter has reached capacity, it will engage the internal bypass valve. It simply means that your oil will no longer be filtered. When oil is no longer being filtered, the dirt/wear metals can eventually wear on your engine's bearings, pistons, cam lobes, etc.
Hi there

If your filter is blocked it will starve your engine components of oil and cause serious damage.

It's only a few quid for a filter and not worth risking,

Dave (gorleston u.k.)
built into just about every oil filter is a neat lil feature that bypasses the filter if its plugged. usually even cartridge type have this.you know that spring that goes in and holds it to that plate.anyway.it puts unfiltered oil into the system. sometimes i wonder about those darn things and how much they can filter in like high pressure, high volume systems.

i think allied or allied signet builds most of them, even for different companies. anyway i think its a canadian company. search for like unbiased comparison, i found 1 around 2000(yr) that explained most of this, and it gave relief pressures, relief gasket material etc.dont quote me on this, its been a few yrs.
Most if not all modern cars have a by-pass valve fitted to the oil filter, in the event of the filter blocking the buy pass valve will open and allow a reduced oil flow to the engine. This will still cause the oil light to come on when the engine idles and must only be used to get the car home or garage.

Ja.
All cars have a bypass for the oil filter in case it gets plugged up....

Depending on how much it was plugged and for how long, would result in a range of nothing, to a failed bearing...
Most Modern Filters have as bypass installed to prevent such an occurrence. But now you've opened yourself into a whole new set of problems. Now you are allowing unfiltered oil to be used by your engine. This can be a real problem later with engine issues and even oil cooler and turbo problems. Not knowing what you really have well... this can be a real disaster in the making. Change your filter regularly according to your maintenance schedule, the price is worth avoiding the chaos later.
eventually it will ruin the engine because it could,nt filter the oil and dirt would get around the bearings.
The bypass isn't in the filter, but in the engine block. In a small/big block chevy, it is a little spring loaded plunger under where the filter screws on. Oil that is constantly being bypassed because of dirt, will let that dirt circulate through the engine and eventually ruin it.
