Why is it critical for an engine's oil and oil filter to be serviced regularly?

The same reason you have a liver. Contamination, debris etc. Your filter removes these foreign objects from your oil. After awhile, the filter becomes clogged with these contaminates and must be changed. The oil itself begins to break down from the heat and wear and tear also so it needs to be changed. Cheap insurance for a long lasting car. I think everyone has their own schedule of maintenance. I do mine every 2000-2500 miles. Been working for our family so far, not one vehicles has crapped out before 350,000 miles. Why is it critical for an engine's oil and oil filter to be serviced regularly?
Simply because there are still some vehicle manufacturers out there that STILL CANNOT build a decent engine such as Ford/Lincoln and Mercury. Their engines are flimsy and notoriously unreliable. You should always change the oil and filter on these vehicles even if the engines built by these manufacturers don't usually last past the third or fourth (if your lucky) oil change. It is supposed to extend the lifespan of your engines if done every 3000 miles. But with Ford products being as desposible as they all actually are, it makes no difference at all. After 3 or 4 oil changes- POP goes your engine. Ford quality job 1........ Yeah right! Why is it critical for an engine's oil and oil filter to be serviced regularly?
Heat, contamination, wear metals, moisture. These all can affect your oil life. The oils viscosity can beak down and limit the protection it offers to prevent friction/wear.
because the oil is the only thing that keeps it from being metal to metal in all engines, when the oil gets dirty or doesn't flow good because it hasn't been changed in a while the engine will wear a lot more, and this causes a lot more friction, which is the worst enemy any engine can have, the better the oil and the more often you change it the longer any engine will last, even a lawn mower needs its oil changed once in a while, but on a car,its very important,it can be the difference in how long an engine will last, good luck.
Yes extremely critical. The reason why is that the oil creates a pressurized fluid barrier between the engines moving parts. The viscosity of the oil is the engines only protection. This fluid has to endure sub zero temps up to about 500F, and maintain it's viscus properties. It also has to withstand burning hot gasses, carbon, unburned hydrocarbons,(from combustion) and condensation, and dirt (that are drawn in by the crankcase breather). If you have coolant leaking into your oil or the oil all burns or leaks out, you will have total engine failure.

I would say it's worth it to change it every 3 months or 3k miles.
oil lubricates moving parts in your engine.. when it becomes dirty or thick, it does not lubricate as well.

most poeple recomend changing oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles.

In all actuality, oil, on the norm, last much longer than this.

newer GM vehicle are equipped with an ';oil life system';

It is very complexed to explain (so i'm not going to try), but it is very accuarate at telling when oil needs to be changed, i have heard of people going 8 to 10k before needing oil changes with this system.

If you don't have the GMOLS, I would suggest sticking with the 3 month, 3,000 mile change.

EDIT: had to add to this after seeing some flamer go off on ford products...

check out this website millionmilevan.com

a 5.4 modular v8 that has been running problem free for a million miles. with oil changes between 10 and 55 thousand miles apart.

I just saw a article a couple weeks ago about a chevy truck passing the same milestone... but that article also stated that he had gone through FIVE trannsmissions in that million miles.

Like the saying goes... 99% percent of chevy's ever sold are still on the road today......

Can't believe only 1% made it all the way home.
It is critical to have your oil changed regularly, to prevent friction.. which would wear your parts out faster, causing you to have to replace your parts more often. You see metal flakes in your oil when you change it, because the parts rub against each other. If you did not change your oil, those metal flakes build up, and wear on your parts. The filter needs to be changed regularly, because the flakes build up, and then once the filter reaches a certain point, then it cant clean any more, causin the flakes to go on into the engine.
oil lubes the internals of the motor. as the motor runs, ';things'; get in the oil that make it gritty(on a microscopic level). These ';things'; wear an engine out prematurely.

Tried to simplify it as much as possible
Oil is like your blood in you body if you didn't have a Liver you would Die. samething.
an engine works by using a piston that rubs up and down against a cylinder. friction creates a lot of heat. oil reduces this friction and heat. if you don't change your oil and filter regularly, then the pistons can heat up so hot that they could start to melt and weld against the engine's block. then you would have to buy a new engine!

the other reason is that oil works to keep the engine clean. changing the oil flushes out all of the dirt and sludge in an engine.
