Does this mean that I must go through the hassle of draining (in order to preserve) my synthetic oil every time I replace the oil filter?
Are there long lasting (15,000 miles between changes) engine oil filters available? What if my oil filter is rated for 5,000 miles, but my synthetic motor oil is rated for 15,000 miles?
There are longer life oil filters available, Amsoil is one of them. What makes them last? Oil filter quality is based on alot of criterias but one of the most important is the amount of ';media'; in the filter. The media is the ';fiber'; that traps contaminates, When 99% of the TOP manufacturers can only make oil filters for 3-5k how can someone else make one to go 15k? They can't. If you are smart enough to use a synthetic why ';dumb'; (nothing personal) it up with not wanting to just replace an oil filter %26amp; 1/2qt. of oil every 3-5k? Do yourself a favor %26amp; change your oil %26amp; filter on a regular basis!
PS-When you just change the oil filter you DO NOT have to drain the crankcase. Just do the filter, run the vehicle for leaks %26amp; to fill the filter then top-off oil as the dipstick indicates. When you pull the filter you DO NOT lose all the oil, maybe a 1/2qt. even if you leave it off for days! (depends on size of filter)
PSS-Oil filters are equipped with a ';by-pass'; valve, when they are ';full'; (so to speak) the valve closes %26amp; no longer filters the oil, it does just that- by-passes it!What if my oil filter is rated for 5,000 miles, but my synthetic motor oil is rated for 15,000 miles?
First off why would you assume you drive your car in perfect conditions. Lots of short trips = more oil changes. High tempatures= more oil changes dusty conditions=more oil changes. So just get into the habit of changing the oil at regular intervals never longer than the manufactures reccomend distance just in case you have a engine problem you can show receipts. If you change oil your self take a picture of the instrument cluster milage and oil filter and oil reciept. I use mobil one and factory oil filters and change every 4,000 miles because I like my motor.
The best way to tell is to do a more conservative oil change (say between 5000 %26amp; 6000 miles), take a small sample using a kit from ';Blackstone Labs'; or one like it, and have a ';used oil analysis. The detailed results sent back will give you a pretty good idea as to how your engine (and your driving style and environment) works with the synthetic oil. And they will give you a very conservative OCI recommendation based on the results of wear metals detected, amount of detergency left, etc.
I agree that the 15,000 mile oil change interval (OCI) is a challenging one for any oil to meet, even high end synthetics like Amsoil or Mobil1, especially since the oil tends to thicken and any financial benefit you get from saving money on oil may be offset by the lowered fuel economy anyways. But I also think one can discount the extremely conservative OCI posted above this response. If one is doing 4,000 or 5,000 oil changes, then why bother using an expensive synthetic when newer ';Group II'; and ';Group II+'; base oils are the best ever refined and certainly can go well beyond the ';3,000 mile oil change myth?'; The myth continuing to be perpetuated by dealer service centers, ';quickie lubes,'; and retail chains that often contradict their own OCI recommendations from the factory?
Personally, I wouldn't change synthetic out before 5,000 miles at around four months (at the minimum) and wouldn't keep them in my particular engine for more than 7,500 miles or six months.
But don't take my word for it, nor should you trust someone's opinion based on their ';gut instinct.'; For more information, go to the www.bobistheoilguy.com site and click on the forum, and research the huge bounty of factual information in the form of threads and oil analysis data basis available at the site. Otherwise, you're just wasting your money, contributing to the used oil disposal problem, and sending your hard earned cash to often unscrupulous dealerships, fast lube chains, and big oil companies that make plenty of profit already...
No matter what the oil is rated for, I would still change it every 5,000 with your filter. Other wise, you will have to drain it and save it when you remove the filter due to the amount of oil that would rush out while the filter is off and you put the other one on. Check out Amsoil.com because they offer a few 15,000 mile filters.
Consumers should follow the maintenance schedule that best fits their cars' warranty or which is suggested by the manufacturer......................yet maybe one day we'll all learn that the ';3000 mile'; oil change is all a big scam and we really can drive a lot farther.
If your car has a condition based servicing system it will take into account things like short trips and cold starts, all of which hammer your oil. If it has not i would recommend some where in between the oil and filter life. 15000mle oil usually lasts 9000mles on a vehicle with condition based servicing with the filter being changed every oil change.
You have to change your filter a couple of times between oil changes or get a better filter
